There it is! Was wondering how long it would take. I actually thought it was a Nick Stevens thread at first glance.

Welcome aboard Nicola.

Is anyone else concerned that we traded away our first 3 picks to get this done? We're required to make 5 list changes this off-season, and while she's a quality player, this is a hell of a price.

Probably pays to read the first post properly. Just noticed that. Seems an exorbitant price. I'm aware that AFLW picks aren't valued the same as AFL due to being smaller rounds, but still!

Well the way I see it, we're one of 8 teams that gets to stockpile national talent as the junior pathways are developing.

We've just chucked away 3 top 25 picks, including a top 5 pick, and got a top 30 pick back. She was Collingwood's first pick, but that's the kind of stuff you give up for a top 5 midfielder or key forward.

Why would it be a concern?

Stevens is 23 and widely considered one of the best defenders in the game. She'll likely be a terrific player for us for a number of years.

We will still make the required number of changes to the squad. We'll just enter the draft later - which is fine given draft picks don't hold anywhere near the weight as they do in the AFL.

When was the last time we traded with Collingwood and won on the deal?

Does it go back as far as Fraser Murphy?

Heath Scotland.

In an 8-team competition that's just starting to get quality youth development, I'd want a few top 30 picks up my sleeve.

She's not a line breaker, and we've already got two solid KPDs, which makes this a very strange trade.

Im rather concerned that we gave away 3 draft picks for one player. It smacks of short sightedness IMO
Wouldnt think theres a lot of difference between pick 28 coming our way and giving up 21 so its not actually 3 picks . She looks absolute quality so having Davey and Stevens in our backline for the next 10 years will make us very hard to score against i would think . They also may want to play Brianna up forward at times as well giving us great flexibility . Seems the drafting strategy of stockpiling defenders is not confined to the mens team .

What have you seen of the top 30 prospects that makes you want to bring as many of them in as possible?

The AFLW draft is heavily regulated & draft picks at this stage are clearly not as valuable as they are in the AFL landscape.

With far less talent available this year than last when clubs were built from scratch, bringing in an established elite young footballer like Stevens is a very good move - particularly given we didn't have to give up any players in return.

She's one of the best players in the game & wanted to come to Carlton. Bringing her across was an absolute no-brainer.

What have you seen of her that suggests she's 'just' a key defender?

Net loss of two picks.

There's nothing 'short-sighted' about bringing in a 23 year old top end talent.
