Trained all preseason as a mid, then injuries to McVee, AMW and Windsor forced him back.

It sucks, but I mean it's not a total shock he's been moved back and is a bit lost given there's an apparent new game plan and he's only been looking at it from a midfielder perspective.

I'm more than happy to crack it at Goody with where the game style is at so far, but this isn't really something that's hard to understand.
Feels like an easy solution would be starting Lindsay at half-back more (where we can use his kicking skills to orchestrate plays), Langdon staying on a wing where he belongs and Rivers getting his mid minutes.

Not like we'd be losing much defensively with that shift.

Yep, said something similar about Lindsay somewhere in the blur of comments since Sunday, or maybe even before. The lack of imagination is frustrating. I'd actually love to see Rivers in more of Sparrow's role as a mid/forward - Previously he's been rated as our best kick for retention. Bowey similar - I know some have been critical of him lately, but he's still rated as one of our best kicks despite a couple of noticeable big errors. Much prefer Bowey than any of Spargo, Laurie, Woewodin or Sparrow kicking it inside 50 and providing forward pressure.

We also named 6 defenders aside from Rivers - Bowey, Salem, TMac, Howes, Petty and Lever.

Absolutely no reason to have zero CBAs. Especially when we could utilise someone like Lindsay down back for a bit too.

Spargo is an excellent kick inside 50, but otherwise agreed given he offers literally nothing else anyway.

It has to be done. I can't see a reason he can't play a similar role to Ben Keays at the Crows. Tackles hard, pressures well, kicks the odd goal. And the Crows' midfield is much better without him in it.

Ironically it was Viney who lead the way in our improved kicking forward post-2018 finals and into the flag. He was the first of the mids to start actually lowering his eyes and going shorter inside 50, but then seems to have completely forgotten it since 2021. Would be interesting to see if he can get that back by playing that forward role (not that Goody will do it, but it's nice to dream).

I agree with this, Viney (field kicking and set shots) and Fritsch (set shots) initially improved when Williams first arrived but since then absolutely nothing..

You could argue though that Viney was coming from such a low base that he could only really go one way and Fritsch was always a good set shot but just had the yips for a year or so and it was purely confidence thing more than technique.

With Viney it wasn't a skill thing IMO, it was a focus thing. He just went from kicking it long to actually thinking about it and kicking it short. He wasn't all of a sudden a great kick, he was just doing different things. Since 2021 though it's been old habits for all of them though.

I don't think Viney has been as bad as he's copping, and his inside 50 entries are no worse than that of any of our other mids. In fact I'd hazard a guess that over the two games his kicks would have lead to more marks inside 50 than any of our other players. That would say less about Viney than it does about our forward set up and how we get the ball in there.

I think that basically every team in the comp would struggle to score playing Goodwin's gameplan.

Let me preface this with: some of forwards are simply lazy.

But if, as a forward, you only get one opportunity at a set shot per game, then the pressure is on.
A guy who regularly gets hit on the cheat when he leads is going to be much more confident.

When we consistently set up the same way every game and we do the same thing at VFL level I would say that's more than just laziness.

Viney had 3 score involvements on the weekend, Chandler had 10. Looks like Viney was as bad as ever with his delivery. Viney was the lowest score involvement per disposals player

That's cool but also not what I said. We've had 16 marks inside 50 this year and Viney's been the kicker for at least four of them off the top of my head.

I'm not saying he's been a star only that our system makes it nearly impossible for our mids and our forwards to connect properly.

Marks inside 50 equal shots at goal. So can't have had much on the weekend if he was the lowest score involvement player

Well no, they often don't result in scores. But I can remember 4 marks inside 50 from Viney kicks over the first two weeks which is a quarter of our marks inside 50 for the season. 16 marks inside 50 over two games is a deplorable number and illustrates my point. Our forwardline is a crowded flat-footed mess and our midfielders are instructed to bomb it to the top of the goal square as a default. Jason Akermanis would struggle to find a target in our forwardline with how we set up.

Chandler had 10 score involvements but 1 goal assist, so I'm not sure on this logic that Chandler kicking inside 50 = goals.

Viney has had 1 goal assist from 11 inside 50s this year, Chandler has had 1 from 10 inside 50s.

If you score it's classed as a score involvement, so Chandler kicking 4 scores on the weekend impacts that as well.

Also, Viney had 6 score involvements in round 1, Chandler had 1.

I feel like hes the 1 guy who has improved his set shots by a lot. No stats to back this up just going off what I think ive seen.

His expected score (know you love it) from set shots was steady from 2021 but took a bit of a dip last year.

His kicking efficiency peaked in 2018/19 but has steadily dropped since then.

Chandler had an out of the box game that we probably won't see again this season. He was very good at impacting higher up the ground and also finding space deep to provide an option and impact the scoreboard.
