2. Too many players stab at the ball. Lynch, Hunter, LeCras. Our 3 main forwards. All stab there shots for goals. McKinley is the only forward who kicks through the ball in any shape or form.

That's cos if he didn't stab at it, it'd be out of the stadium ;)

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact Hunter and Mckinley are not tall enough for Full forward.

I take the point of having a decent CHF but we still somebody who can mark or at least bring the ball to ground in close too.

Notte would be a good option to replace either Hunter or Mckinley to give us that extra height but not sure how he would go weight wise.

Brown would of been an option if he didn't do his knee.

I think we either need to put lynch at FF and bring Seaby (also good for a contested mark in goal square) back in or take a chance with notte.

Out of 23 players to shoot at Goal this year only 6 players have more goals then Behinds. (BOLDED)
Whats worse is only 2 of them are forwards the other 4 are midfielder.
Our other Forwards have a combined total of: 26:32 (Underlined)
That is terrible.
You dont mind Midfielders missing 50% of Goals but Forwards should be expected to shoot at least 60% goals to behinds.

As Embers has alluded to the problem stems from where we take our kicks. Far too many shots are from taken from deep in the pockets and unless you're a dead eye dick it's a 50/50 bet.

It's easy to point out why we miss the shots, but much harder to explain why the shots are taken from there in the first place.

Partly, I think it's due to the legacy of our running mids, the forward line was a support act to the midfield, and quite often we would leave our 50 metre arc bare to allow the likes of Judd and Cousins to break into space and take pot shots.

Another factor, IMO, is the development of a gameplan around Ash Hansen. The man was a lead up HFF IMO, rarely took a contested mark and as a result our playing group didnt have the confidence to kick it to him one out in dangerous positions. Then they looked for him wide on the lead, opposition clubs are happy to do that.

Let's hop JK can change all that and stamp himself on the corridor.

Finally, we put too much faith in Lecras, the worse thing that could possibly happen this year would be Lecreas to finish as our leading goal scorer. That's putting too much pressure on a FP, and the skill necessary to spot up a small leading target is some we just dont have at the moment.

In terms of our development. I really think we need to play one tall at the top of the goal square as the marking target, some one like Bmac leading in front of him and the likes of Lecras and Masten turning there men around and feeding off the crumbs.

Our forward line will continue to suffer with Lecras as the go to man.

combination of factors, main one being that it's a bit of a product of our gameplan in reality. We have (for a few years now) relied on a quick, quick midfield, playing on at all costs and "just getting it in there" as quickly as possible. When we had Judd, cuz, kerr etc it really played to our strength, but even then we won most games by pure weight of inside 50s and shots at goal - I mean hell, we basically won a premiership without a recognised forward line!

It's also combined with the lack of a big men focal points up forward, our two best/most productive forwards at the moment are Le Cras and McKinley really, and they're small guys, you're gonna get a lot of leading to pockets, quick snaps, crumbing, shots under pressure, less set shots etc etc.

solutions:
a) change the gameplan slightly, bring the ball in with more purpose (rather than just bringing it forward no matter what) even if it takes a bit longer, bring it in through the corridor where possible, don't put the ball inside 50 unless you can hit a player.
b) start backing our big guys, whoever it is, lynch, kennedy, Cox, hunter, whoever, play them close to goal, and kick to them, rather than trying to hit smaller guys in the pockets or the big guys leading up outside 50.

thats my take on it anyway.

Here are the West Coast goal-charts for the last three weeks.

Round 6 v Fremantle:

Round 5 v Hawthorn:

And, as a point of comparison, St Kilda's goalchart from round 7, in which they kicked 20 goals 8.

I think those charts just tend prove what we've already been discussing:

- We are indeed taking too many shots from the pocket.

- Equally, however, we are simply missing too many shots from relatively simple positions, notably against Melbourne and Hawthorn.

- The lack of a power forward and a crumber is a huge part of the problem. In the Saints' goal-chart there are a lot of goals being scored from 10-15m out right in front. Almost all of these were scored by Milne and Schneider, as well as one in the square from Kotchitzke. The two goals on the upper-left corner, from outside 50, were both scored by Riewoldt.

To further enhance the points already made.

WCE vs Freo : 18 Shots outside the corridor.

WCE vs Melb : 18 shots from outside the corridor.

Based on the graphic above, we have kicked 10 goals, 8 behinds from inside the corridor and 7 goals, 20 behinds from outside the corridor. It doesn't take a stats wiz to tell you we need to take more of our shots at goal from inside the corridor.

I guess the hard part is working out a strategy to achieve this. I'll be watching this weekend to see what the players do when they take a mark 40m out, in the pocket. Do they shoot at goal or look for a short lead and quick kick into the corridor. Obviously, the latter is dependant on moving the ball quickly, before the opposition get numbers back.

A powerful marking FF could improve our chances of taking more shots inside the corridor IMO. Hopefully NN will offer Cox some support in the ruck in a few weeks which would release Lynch to CHF and perhaps allow the Eagles to try Kennedy at FF.
