Danny Stanley
#28

187cm, 88kg
DOB: 18/02/1988
AFL game tally: 4
Debut: 2007 Queen's birthday match (R11) v Melbourne (MCG)

Danny enters the 2009 season on the back of some excellent 2008 VFL form. He was named as one of the Collingwood VFL team's best players in an impressive 10 out of 14 games, averaging 25 possessions and seven marks per game. Stanley was voted by collingwoodfc.com.au as the most valuable VFL player of 2008, along with Brent Macaffer.

Selected by Collingwood with pick 21 in the 2005 national draft, Stanley played two AFL games in 2007, and another two in 2008. His most impressive AFL performance to date was the final round game against Fremantle last year. While receiving little game-time in his natural midfield position, Stanley still managed 16 possessions and four marks in a loss. Danny has acknowledged that his AFL opportunities thus far have been limited, with Shane O'Bree and Scott Burns already serving as the side's clearance specialists.

Recruited in the same year as Pendlebury and Thomas, it is time he joined his fellow draftees in the AFL. Stanley excels around the clearances at VFL level, regularly winning the hard ball and tackling fiercely -the exact type of player the senior side needs following the retirement of Scott Burns.

Bring on 2009!

Recruitment Info

Stanley was drafted from the Geelong Falcons with pick 21 in the 2005 national draft. He was an underage draftee at 17, and considered a hard-working and strong-bodied midfielder with a good overhead mark. Danny fell off the radar a bit after suffering from glandular fever towards the end of the 2005 season, and as of such went later in the draft than some expected mid-year.

Pre-season Training

Along with most of the other Pies players, Stanley kicked off the pre-season with 2 weeks at a high-altitude camp in Arizona.

Stanners didn't get much of a mention in official reports on pre-season training, unfortunately. Bigfooty posters had mixed opinions about his performance in the pre-season intra-club matches, with some noting that he played well while others thought he had little influence. New recruits Beams and Sidebottom were impressive in these matches, and could be vying for the same midfield spot as Stanley in the upcoming pre-season tournament. Lets hope he gets a game!

It is great to see so much positive posts regarding Stanners!!!
He has not be given the opportunities others have received so far. He is fantastic in the VFL a cut above the rest. Tough, strong and creates a real presence on the ground. You will be given an opportunity I am sure and when you get it just prove all the Stanners Knockers wrong.
Go and get them Stanners you have us all behind barracking hard.:thumbsu::)

Stanners seems to be such a nice young man so focused and determined. I can not imagine how tough and heart breaking it has been over the past few years not breaking into the side. Yet he seems not to spit the dummy, he keeps his head up and every week he goes out there and tries even harder. I went past training the other day and everyone had gone except Stanners and Gavan Brown and they were still running around. Boy he is determined big bugger. Hats off to you Stanners keep it up !!!!!!

Pre-season games

Here are some notes I made after watching the first AFL NAB cup game against West Coast (can't find the stats):

Stanley was subbed on with about 10 minutes left in the third quarter, so didn't get a great deal of game-time. He appeared to be playing up the ground at first, but was in the middle for a couple of centre clearances. He won one centre clearance in an impressive manner, attacking the ball strongly while keeping his arms free and then quickly handballing off to a player in space.

Around the ground, Stanley was involved as a linking player on a few occasions as the team moved the ball upfield. He appeared more composed than in previous AFL games, and his field kicking was on target. He attacked the loose ball aggressively in a couple of seperate plays. Overall, he certainly wasn't prominent, but probably did as much as you could expect given limited game time.

Stanners wasn't picked for the remaining NAB cup games, but has apparently played very well in the three VFL pre-season games to date. Here are his stats in those games, and some comments from VFL coach Gavin Brown:

Game 1 vs. Coburg Tigers

28. Danny Stanley (7k, 16h, 1m, 4t): Stanley was hard, tough and tight in the stoppages. His one touch grabs and handballs were fantastic. His hardness at the contest and the footy was first class.

Game 2 vs. North Melbourne

28. Danny Stanley (11k, 8h, 7m, 2g, 2t): Stanley had another terrific game. He has taken his game to another level. He looks very dynamic in stoppages. His marking was also fantastic.

Game 3 vs. Geelong

28. Danny Stanley (13k, 12h, 7m, 1g, 6t): Whether it is wet or dry his impact on games is absolutely fantastic. He is ready to go when he gets his opportunity at the senior level.

Well Danny, a game like todays against North Ballarat deserves some recognition and since you certainly won't get it from Madhouse, and probably not from all the other Stanley hating sites, here's something at least from BF (mainly).

You were just great today and I'm looking forward to seeing the stats when they come out. As always, your courage was outstanding and if some of our senior princesses had half your guts, we'd be world beaters. Keep your head up, keep burning and maybe if Madhouse doesn't respect you, someone else will. Here's some of your critics talking:

--------------------------

My report will be brief as it is me birthday and I needs to get drunk. Ask qustions and I'll get around to them. Nice way to kill the day in this weather.

I also had a tough time of it working out players, as I haven't been for over a year (eg. took me until late 3rd to work out who 38 was (Reed!).

Agree with the best 3.

Stanley: Imagine Stanley doing an impersonation of Buckley, and you've got his game. Was back, forward, middle, running his guts out, used it well (albeit at a good Stanley level). Was super!

Piespies1995

Stanley- excellent all day and easily best on ground. Moved between the middle and half forward. He kicked four but was also helping out his defence when possible. Looks like he really wants that senior spot and who could argue with him getting it. very dominant.

MAKESHIFT

Went along to the game today. What a magnificant day for a footy match the conditions were perfect.
Sun shining and my favourite player starred.......
Yes the Stanners bandwagon is back.... HE WAS FANTASTIC ALL DAY.
I really was wrapt to see him shine yet again. Today was one of his best although the games at Geelong have been close.
If he honestly does not get a game next week I am going to scream.....
He is exactly what we need and even MM could not have dismissed his efforts and hard work today. His body work and shepherds, bumps and holding players out are great unfortunately there is no stats for those but there were many of those all day as well as everything else. He demanded the ball and got it but above all he chased it down and got it for himself most of the time. His contested marks were great often flying up against two or three players taller and bigger than him none as strong through.
GO STANNERS

The eye (EB&W)

Stanley was outstanding, both in attack and defending, kicking goals from tackels.. Sidy was good some terrific passes which resulted in goals and centre clearances..
Thoolan has no idea of playing man on man. Liked Francis as a player. Scott Reed no. 38 showed promise.Rounds & Blight show promise. We were well beaten in the ruck duels. Blair was good in patches. We beat ourselves from poor kicking in front of goals. Peverill missed one from 30 mts. straight in front.

And Me

Stanley - Back to the stupid “high forward” role but I think he “interpreted” it loosely today. Easily BOG and easily TOG (Toughest On Ground!), he marked everything including a classic up and under from Cook that left him waiting for the big NB backman running straight at him from behind – stood his ground and took the hit and the mark and goaled. Sensational and gutsy. In that much abused phrase, he was a class above. MM was there but probably blinked every time Danny had it – would have been a lot of blinking though.

Well done and keep battling.
