Player Watch #28 Will Edwards

I think he gets given every chance to play a regular part this year.

Good aerial work is so important with guys like Nick Watson becoming even more prominent. Aerial contests with the ball spilling out in d50 are kryptonite

Edwards in gives Mccartin some freedom when he's back and the flow on effect means we're stronger in the air and coughing up less chances to good small forwards.

Do we have a nickname for Edwards yet?

might be showing my age here, but would Bam Bam work?

You need to get on the socials mate. Before someone gives him something stupid like Willsy. Go have a chat with the True Bloods crew.

Apparently his nickname in the team is Wed....seriously boys you need to get better!:cryv1:

Haha, BF is as social as I get. Feel free to ping them.

Bam Bam has got to be better than Wed.

Having watched Edwards in our VFL sides for years, my expectations were limited.

But he’s been a revelation. Size combined with solid skill.

It does make me wonder who else might have shone if they’d managed to break out of what was, for several years, an absolutely dismal Swans VFL set-up.

Conversely, he was kept on the list all through that time, so you could also say that the coaches have a good eye for talent.
Very few of those who were cut from the list have gone on to any great heights.

Will Edwards really reminds me of Jack Payne from the Lions. Both big units with similar back stories (came up via academy, lengthy apprenticeship in VFL), Andrews definitely plays better with more freedom when Payne is his side kick and the early signs would suggest that McCartin will thrive not having to focus entirely on lock down with Edwards in the team.

Excellent comparison - I've been keen for us to have a crack at Payne, not realising we had our own version awaiting incubation.

I've seen Jack at our local cafe and he is massive. Wouldn't want to be in a pack that he was crashing. Will (at least on TV) looks even bigger.

I like it and hopefully he's back this week

Melican is supposed to perform that role but seems a bit off at the moment.

I bit of a disingenuous bit about Edwards in the AFL match report. The heading of "Another Gun From The Academy" is a dog whistle to the complainers. Sure, he came up through the academy but there is no reference to the fact that nobody wanted him so we took him as a rookie.
Cue the 'unfair academy' bleating.

As a 19 yo.
