OK we have Gibbs sewn up with our first pick.

Welcome Bryce!!! My son will have your number planted on his footy jumper next year. Any guesses to what number Gibbs will take?

On the the other picks. IMO we need the following:

Key defender - Pick 17
Quick rebounding and tough HBF - Pick 19
Left footed forward flanker in O'keefe mould - Pick 35
Ruckmen - Pick 51

Thoughts?

i'll put my house on gibbs wearing the no.4 jumper for obvious reasons i can't be bothered going into.

With picks 1, 17, and 19 I would bite the bullet and go for the best mid fielders we can get now.

So Gibbs No 1.

I would take a punt on the likes of the following being our defensive options and backing them in:

Thornton, Hartlett, Bower, OHailpin and at a pinch next year if stretched Mclaren as a back up tall.

Depending on where we are at I wouldn't mind with a late pick if he still around and nominates for the draft taking as a forward perspective Aaron Edwards who played at the Eagles for a year or two and has kicked 79 goals in the VFL. Great build.

With our 3rd round and 4th round pick who knows, if needed take mid fielders again, have a crack at loading up on them, although yes we do need to explore our ruck options.

Our decision making may come down too who we can snare in the PSD.

If we're not going to use our 3rd on a Father/Son, and we're going to offload some players. I would try my damned hardest to trade the 3rd and 4th picks and players for a chance at higher picks.

A team that does not want to rebuild as much might be happy to swap their 2nd round pick for our 3rd and a player or two.

Not talking about swapping some of our valued kids, maybe Livo... we could argue he has been playing in not his suited position and as a high ranked pick once upon a time it might be worth a shot to another team to see what he can do.

Pick 1 - Gibbs or Hansen. Will be very happy with either.

Pick 17 - Albert Proud

Pick 19 - Andrejs Everitt

Pick 35 - Daniel Dzufer - Left footer, who is moulded to be a flanker/utility (Played with him too).

Pick 51 - ?

Albert Proud will be long gone at 17. The other two are in slightly higher positions than what they'll probably end up going, but are really good players. Dzufer has being doing well in the AFLQ.

It's a good idea. A player like Wiggins plus a 4th round pick might get you into the later stages of the second round. As long as you're not giving away anyone with an upside.

I would think...

1 - Bryce Gibbs (Mid/Flank)
17 - Joseph Anderson (HBF/Mid) [or Ricky Petterd should he slip]
19 - Jarryd Allen (CHB/FB)
35 - Zac Millar (Wing/Flank) [Might not make it this far]
51 - Tomi Johnston (Centre/Rover)
67 - Nick McKenna (Tall Utility)

Would be a good result

I like the look of that, where can I find out more about Anderson and Allen?
Are you assuming we can pick up another ruckman in the PSD, because I think we need another, unless Aisake comes on in leaps and bounds.

I think Wiggins is to good a player to let go. I really dont think any Carlton players that we are looking to get rid of will attract any attention from other clubs.

If we are to get ourselves of the bottom we need to nail pick 17, 19 and 35. I really dont think the father/ son will be justified at pick 35.

Our priority to should be attacking defender and key position defender at picks 17 and 19

You're probably right about people not wanting our players... well not the periphary anyway.

Our list at the moment more or less demands that take the best available talent and not speculate by need.............we need basically everything anyway.

If the best available happens to be a Key Defender, Ruckman and quick skillful midfielder then even better.

The Proud pick is more wishful thinking. If he does go earlier, which he will, then I think Pettard will be a great choice. And about Dzufer. I played with him when we both played for Caloundra in QLD. Great player. Excellent runner.

Tomi Johnson at pick 51 will be great too.

This is my theory on the ruckman in this draft. Leuenberger is going to be a star. The rest of them are questionable. Renouf is the second best and is probably worth a pick around 30 on a best available list. So why get a ruckman in the main draft for the sake of it? Particularly when two of the hottest prospect for next year are Matt Kreuzer and Tom Bellchambers, both over 199cm's and oozing with talent as we speak.

I'd take Orren Stephenson from North Ballarat in the rookie draft (once the 1 over 23 rule comes in.) He's a rugby convert who started football at age 19 and has really improved this year.

I'd also give Setanta a run in the ruck as relief for Barnaby. He seems to like open space and I'm sure we could get him atleast to neutralise the other ruckman at bounces, at worst.

I'm not sure where you can get extra info on them, to be honest.

But I can tell you Joseph Anderson was Best and Fairest for his club in the Northern Territory Seniors when they won a premiership last year. He's aboriginal, quick and about 188cms with a good body type.

Jarryd Allen is an athletic Key Position Defender who is one of the best overhead marks in this draft. Hope that helps.

Crucial that we nail picks 17,19 & 35, being a deep draft we must make them count.

Stating the obvious but this is our most crucial draft in the clubs history, get it right & we will be going places.

Pick 1 - Bryce Gibbs

Pick 17 - Proud/Collard/O'Brian/Jetta/Luenberger (one is bound to fall through - most likely to be O'Brian)

Pick 19 - N. Brown - Good sized KP Defender - a better version of Livingston

Pick 35 - Renouf or any other good sized utillities available

---------------------------------------------------------

PSD - John Meeson (hopefully!)

*If we somehow wheel and deal another pick in the 2nd round: Andrejs Everitt would be my selection - also these selections would be subject to players falling through

While I tend to agree along the lines of midfield and defenders, we have got the worst attack in the comp (based on points scored) and most of those by 1 (super) man.
Yes yes I'm a huge wrap for Kennedy as well, but is he starting to look injury prone???
Waite should play further up field.
???? Do we take another tall forward.

BB, our forward line really is the least of our worries. The way the ball comes in most of time it's amazing that Fev has been able to kick 80 goals so far this season.

As for our picks, i'd go for something like:

1. Gibbs
17. Pettard, O'Brien, Collard or Connors
19. Jarryd Allan, Schmidt, Anderson
35. Collier or Frawley

That would be incredible but highly unlikely to happen. Proud and Dzufer will go earlier, but would very much like to see them both at Carlton.

Absolutely, Proud will be a top 10 pick, that's for sure. As for Dzufer, i'm not that sure. There are just so many players that you would love to have at Carlton.

Totally agree on your comments regarding the Ruck situation. If we cant get Renouf at 35 we should wait for next year. We have 4 functional ruckman at the moment and could certainly be in a worse position.

Not sure about Setanta as a ruckmen?? Needs to concentrate on playing back for the next few years.

Hopefully it may pan out as c4 suggested-

1. Gibbs
17. Obrien
19. Brown
35. Renouf

That would provide a good mix with about where they are rated.

I think that it is essential that we pick up a ruckman this draft. Admittedly, I do not know the talent that is on offer but what I do know is that French isn't getting any younger and could very well retire next year. Also he is injury prone and really we have nobody else to replace him in the ruck.

Mclaren is a back up at best, Bryan is also not capable of being a #1 ruckman, Deluca doesn't really ruck, Batson might not be on our list next year and Aisake still probably has a couple of years of development to go and there is no guarntee he will make it.

Ideally would love to grab a ruckman with or PP or second round pick who is rated highly but if there is a midfielder or key defender that is too good to refuse then we might just have to pray that French has a good and injury free year.

I'd go all out to pick Leuenberger ahead of Gibbs or Hansen. Lets face it, our ruck division is absolute crap at the moment, and this guy is going to be a quality ruckman. Just think in a couple of years time, first hand on the ball and tapout at the bouncedowns, to our running midfielders, who fire the ball quickly into the forward line to a leading Fevola. I'm a realist, and French tries hard, but is coming to the end of his career, and is getting beaten by lesser known ruckmen from opposing teams. McLaren is a dud, and Bryan, although young and promising, has not improved enough in the 2 or 3 years he has been on our list for my liking. We have got to think seriously about this, picking a quality ruckman, and developing him for our future. If we are to attempt a resurgance, a quality ruckman is essential. Just think, there might never be another opportunity to pick up a quality ruckman like Leuenberger.?

When your struggling like us, you always take the best avaliable talent at Pick 1. From what I've read Leunburger is rated around 5-8 by most and there is no way we should not take Gibbs or Hanson when they are clearly rated as the best talent by most.
