2nd key-forward spot?

We all know Mooney is our best tall forward, but who should have the 2nd spot? Grima is a chance now that Owen has a long-term injury, but he doens't have any AFL experience. You know who I'm voting for though..

Grima can't play AFL this year.The cut off date for promoting Rookies was the thursday before Rd18.

Charlie ain't a key forward. Too small. Lead-up role, can act as a makeshift CHF, but I'd actually like to see him, Nathan and Moons all in the same team.

Nablett. He does more than he gets credit for.

Nathan just has to worry about getting more of the ball.

Even if he only gets 5-10 possies a game though, he uses the ball so well, they're usually effective disposals, better than say the Tomahawk's field kicking at this stage.

Nablett is awesome. uses the ball very well; he might not kick bags of goals, but thats not he is really there for. He sets up alot of play and does some good goal assists as well as one percenters that could never be shown on a stat sheet. Not only that, but Thompson has said he is very happy with nabletts form from the past couple of weeks - he is safe in the side for the time being.

Nath is still learning how to play CHF, but I prefer Mooney staying inside fifty. Having Charlie there gives two solid bodies to kick to (him, Nath) who can push it on to Moons.

I think Nathan is the go, the main reason is that he is really fit often taking two leads to a contest and is starting to lead all over the ground in a lead up manner.

He does have his deficiencies which are there for all to see, lack of speed, pack marking ability, lack of bulk etc. However he does have a lot of skill below his knees, to get the contested ball and feed it out if he lost the mark.

That is something that impresses me most.

At this stage I can see no other player, including Hawkins, who is at his level of fitness and skill.

Charlie would be spending his time bumping into Mooney, Johnson et. al. and spoiling their marks. Something Nablett cannot be accused of.

Any reason Playfair is not included in the poll? I would have thought he is a serious contender. Nathan's form today was terrible - dropped relatively easy marks, set up Mooney with a hospital kick, just very ordinary. If his name was Charlie Gardiner he would be being bagged mercilessly. I still think he will be good long term, but on today's form you would have to give him a rest in the VFL if there is a better option and that is the BIG question. Charlie, by all accounts, is in good form in the VFL but I don't see him as a key position player. I'd be looking at swapping Gardiner for Varcoe (who I also thought was ordinary today). The two contenders for a key forward position in my mind would be Ottens or Playfair and I would prefer to see Ottens stay in the ruck. That leaves Playfair and the big question is (and I haven't seen him to be able to comment) does his form in the VFL put him ahead of Nathan? Based on what I saw of Nathan today, it wouldn't be too hard...

Talking about smokies. If Max Rooke was fit I wonder how he would go. He is the same proportions as Charlie and has heaps more ability and tons of courage. He also knows how to kick a goal when he is swung up forward. How far away is he?

very astute mate, and I wouldn't call him a "smokie" either.

I actually suggested the same thing several weeks back, didn't have many supporters though.
Mooney is basically the only "power" forward down there anyway, and most of our other goals are kicked by the smaller/medium forwards, so I think that's the way to go, replace Nablett with Rooke and have him play a similar type role to O'Loughlin at Sydney; the one power forward [ Hall ] and a group of smaller type players seemed to work pretty well for them, and I'd certainly prefer to see Rooke there ahead of Gardiner or Playfair.

As soon as Nathan works out that his drop in form correlates with his wearing of the headband he will come good.

I don't think that playing in the twos would do much for his confidence so therefore if he is to be dropped then he probably will struggle to get back into the Ones.
To me that is totally unacceptable because I believe he is in our best side.
Just like Wojo, we have to show a bit of faith in him and believe he will come good and strut his undoubted talents on the big stage.

Nathan's the man, been there most of the year and is very mobile for a big mother.

Only problem i saw yesterday was he kept leading into other forwards space and some of his contested marking.

Get them right he'll be a key
