I'll pre-empt this post with the statement that I hear more 'Footscray' games - streaming over the web - than I see on tv.

Against Essendon the call of the game gave the impression that during the 2nd and 3rd quarter 'troubles' we could not find a way to get inside the 50m arc and score goals. To me it sounded like passes weren't hitting targets and that we were missing a bigger body or two to be either a target to kick towards or to crash bodies. Fletcher by all accounts had a field day.

Now the point of the post
There is an ongoing discussion over Wight which always assumes that he is the 3rd choice CHB ... (it is not bad that we think we have choices at CHB because we didn't not so long ago) But whether Wight is the 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice to fill that position, it strikes me that with the return of Williams and Everitt we may be able to fix our deficiency at CHF, and end up with a 'big fella' at CHF.

Obviously the forward line is going well, but few, if any, succesful teams in finals achieve success without a big CHF.

So if the wisdom of this Board is that Williams or Everitt are better CHBs than Wight, would you consider one of Wight or Williams worth a try at CHF when all three are available? We know that Wight likes kicking a goal or two, and either he or Williams would provide that target for others to crumb underneath. Imagine silky Rob, hit & hurt Hahn and some height Wight or Williams as your CHF line.

Personally from what I have seen of Everitt and his fantastic skills, we would waste him at CHB. He would be a fantastic big, creative running wingman or centre.

Sounds good on paper, but neither Wight or Williams instill confidence in me when they're lining up for a set shot.

With big Will at FF as well as Johno, Murph, Hahn and Welshy playing tall/leading in the forward line, we might just not need a true CHF at the moment.

Keep in my mind guys like Aker and Gia at there feet, its a pretty strong forward line.

If it's not broken, why fix it?

I think the club do see Wight as a potential key forward but they had to change their pre season plans and keep in defence after the injuries to Williams and Everitt. As stefoid said, long term Everitt will be able to play just about anywhere.

Jonathon Brown is out of contract this year. What would it cost to get him and could we afford him? We might have room in the cap if West, Johnno, and Eagle just happen to retire. We would probably have to throw a trade or two into the mix.

Lot of ifs here, but we could build a nice side around this bloke, and given the age of our side, it would be a side that could be around for quite a few years.

I think the biggest thing that a Brown would offer our side is that we'd be able to develop a 2nd key position forward. Think about how good it was for Travis Cloke's development with Tarrant and Rocca getting the best 2 defenders. I think we have Hahn and Williams as reasonable players on our list who are from Queensland as well as Hudson (but Hudson really doesn't offer much trade value). You never know though Williams/Hahn/1st rounder? Brisbane would be shattered but it's better than losing him for nothing. Still though 99% chance he'll stay. I would be just as tempted to try get Mitch Clark from Brisbane though.

I've thought this up until this year, too, but Big Will has improved outta sight, thanks to having Hudson around to share the duties. His big grab last week was sensational, and clever tapping to advantage and use of his body is his forte now.

if you ask me we would be more damageing haveing skipper coming out of the goal square.

I reckon we'd have to pay far too much to get him, not that I think he'll be avaiable, anway.

As noted elsewhere, with Big Will playing his part up forward, we need a dominating CHF less than we used to. Our problem is down back, I think. If we lost Lake we'd be stuffed.

Trade Hahn, after what he's shown the last two weeks?????:eek::eek:

Not sure Johnathon Brown would join up with Aka again - was pretty vocal last year.

Everitt may be the answer in the next couple of years ( or maybe Ayce Cordy!?!) but I'm quite happy with Murphy at CHF as long as we keep big Will on the ground to be the monster body to crash around and make space. I don't think we use him enough yet but he is improving each week.
Jarrad Grant was also picked to be that big Forward too but probably couple of years away bodysize-wise

Yeah Im warming to Murph as pretty much our CHF for the next couple of years as long as he isnt asked to play 30m out and get crunched all day.

everitt has never played chb and will play as a hbf.

ayway most chf spend development time at chb for a few years. Don't expect any of them to be the next chris grant, just give them time and enjoy how they progress.

Veteran !!

The bloke is only 26 years old and in the prime of his life :thumbsu:

Eade said exactly this. It's not hard to see why. Wight won't play deep very much but would have the role of leading up and receiving around the centre and giving off to a better kick. Part of his job would be to run a good defender ragged but he wouldn't be asked to compete body on body very much.

The way we rotate, Murph, Hahn and Johnno would probably spend time in that role too but why waste a really tall guy with a huge motor.

Hmmm, as much as I'd like to the contrary, not sure about the likelyhood of J Brown wanting to join Aker

I don't want Fevola, and despite how good Brown would be, I don't think we could afford him or that he'd want to rejoin Akermanis.

I personally am a fan of Skipper for the time being. Strong, mobile, long kick and good hands, his only problem is he can get a bit lost. What you do is have him start about 20m infront of Minson, so you have Skipper running out first and then Minson as the back up long option. Skipper naturally draws an opponent, as does Minson, leaving our smaller players either room to lead into or making it easier for them to crumb.

Skippers biggest problem is confidence, and if we can get his confidence going, I think he can be more than handy. However, ideally long term you would be hoping for Jarryd Grant or Boumann, Mulligan or Williams to fill this spot.

Yes. 26 now. 4 years and he's 30. That's about retirement age but also a perfect time for O'Shea to take over his spot.

If that is the case the O'Shea can wait 4-6 years because Lake is doing a fine job down in the deep end thank you very much !
