Hi Guys,

Hopefully something like this hasnt been posted before but I am currently going with a 3 rookie starting midfield.

Was wondering on opinions of the best 5 rookie mids (including bench).

I currently have trengrove, barlow and Martin starting

With banner and Shuey on the bench?

Any improvements/ suggestions?

Pretty sure it has been done before. I guess though, the rookie choices you made are probably the best available. Do remember they are rookies though. Don't expect magic week in, week out.

It's a viable strategy if going for a league win but it probably wont pay off if you're going for overall. inevitably they are going to be dropped / rested so you will get multiple doughnuts each week.

Hi Hawk 88

I'm also trying my hand at the 5 rookie midfield. I agree that there's just not enough value in the other areas of the field, and the money you save on the mids gives you more to get the other parts of the team up to scratch from round 1.

Currently my 5 rookies are Martin, Barlow, Shuey, Bastinac and Jetta. I'm settled on the first three (and note you have them too) but I'm still undecide on the other two.

Personally I'd stay away from Banner - his form in the NAB Cup was good but I'm just not sure there's a spot in the 22 for him once the real AFL gets underway. And while I think Trengrove will play, I'm not sure he represents value at 174k (you'll be lucky to get more than 100k out of him). That said - he is a safer option for the 5 rookie midfield as you're reducing you're risk of picking up a donut.

Anyways - best of luck with your plan and here's hoping you pick up five rookies that can stay clear of the zeros until you've swapped them for premiums :)

I'm, also going with three rookies starting in the mids - if you are using this strategy, I would keep Kayler-Thomson and Moles in mind as well - particularly over Jetta, who I'm not sure will score all that well.

I too am going for a heavily rookiefied midfield. Starting a few.

By my logic with 2 on the bench, even if you had 4 which is a max. You would only need 2/3 to play. The quality fwd and back rookies are horrible and the rucks don't do crap.

Added to that, in the middle of the year its always the midfield that moves around the most. THere are a few fwds who are cheap who biuld up and the odd back.. But there are always more midfielders who are cheap going up than you have places for.

I seem to be switching between 2 starting and 3 starting rookies in the mid half a dozen times each day. I definitely like the look of having 3 mid premiums + Ball at M4 (4 premiums perhaps?), but i simply don't like the rest of my lines when that is the case, particularly because i'm running either 2 prem rucks or 1 prem + tippet. It looks a lot better when i drop a ruck back to hille/nicnat/seaby but that's not for me this year.

The 3 mids cuts down a bit on the value-players in each line as well, more of a prem/rook strategy of old. You're less likely to miss the boat on a rookie as well which is comforting, i can just see myself missing out on the rich of '09 if i only have 2 starting+2bench mid rookies.
