I don't think it's that far-fetched ... I loved Jude but I think Parker might have more ... I know Jude could get up for a mark but Parker is more athletic generally, can really climb with the right space, and is a better kick for goal.

A lot of our success has come from having smarter coaching and working harder on drills.

Watch when a ball goes to ground in congested area - 1 guy grabs quickly and the other guys automatically run off him in waves whilst others spread fast. Seems obvious - but we do it so clinically with such fast, accurate handballs that it is virtually impossible to stop. Then add rapier kicking from Jetta, Rampe, Mal. The skill levels are remarkable. then top it off with buddy/Goodes/Tippett/Reid and the best defence in the AFL - hello premiers.

Opposition fans should not look at COLA as the reason for our success. They should ask why their players are not operating at the same skill, effort and intensity levels. Or why guys like Kennedy, McGlynn, Laidler etc are shining but couldn't make top 20 in Vic.

Fair enough. But whether Watts ends up any good is irrelevant. The point is he didn't 'save' Melbourne simply by being drafted and getting a gig in his first couple of seasons. The list of top picks who struggled in poor systems is pretty long. Gibbs, Watts etc. The point is getting high picks didn't result in an automatic shift to 'awesome'.

Now those picks have a higher than average chance of becoming core players for lists over time. But that's more to do with the way the club functions in its entirety than just how lucky they were at the draft table.

1. It's good to see that, on a shithouse day where he was getting nothing from the umps and not much of a chance to hit the scoreboard, Buddy is still prepared to work really hard defensively. I wasn't surprised at the start of the year given all the flak he and the rest of the side were copping, but now he's had a bit of a purple patch & the team is travelling well, I thought he might drop off in that department a bit. Happy to be proven to be a stupid ****wit, though. Still, I wish he didn't engage with McKenzie so much in those wrestles. Take a leaf out of Goodes' book and throw both your arms out a bit, make a constipated face.
