Player Watch #37 Corey Warner

I always thought Corey looked like a pretty strong, robust type.

But IF the listed weights are to be believed - at 72kg, he’s the second lightest senior player on our list (behind Rosas).

Ashton Warner was incredibly skillful, but missed out on being drafted because he was too small.

Perhaps Corey’s fundamental problem is size and strength?

A lot of times these things are from when they first arrive and now weights are not allowed to be released

No way Corey is 72kg. He's one of the most jacked on our list

That was my immediate reaction too.

I’m not sure if the listed weights weights are current, or date back years.

But there’s SOMETHING stopping Corey from cracking it as a legit AFL standard player & I just can’t quite put my finger on what it is.

bedford was right. In 2004 the AFL stopped publishing player weights.

Weights will be those from before hand (and if you look at more recent draftees they won't have one published).

As for Corey his issues are not physical, I think he reads the game just a little bit too late, this forces him to just misjudge his impact when hitting the ball, or panic a little too much when disposing of the ball. I also think he may not have AFL grade spatial awareness (but you can train these things, they take time).

Corey Warner is strong and fit and fast, he's just not really a natural footballer so there's basically no footy instincts when needed.

He reminds me most of James Bell.

For the last few years, ive been bullish on Corey. Always looks in ripping shape, finishes high up in the time trials and has a raking left foot. Then I see him actually play..........

As much as we bang on about it, I hope he and those around him don't scour this board, wouldn't feel the greatest.

He's got the physical ability down pat, just needs more composure with footy in hand, be mindful of the game plan and use it with purpose, don't just wheel and go down the line to the first option unless it's 100% on and to advantage. That's his glaring area of improvement. I did notice one time in the praccy v gws he got the ball and almost did it again, wheeled around about to hoof it down the line, then at the last second glanced into the middle, pulled up, and hit the short central option which opened up the ground. Hopefully it's a sign that he's being more mindful of it. Can tell it's not his natural instinct just yet but maybe he understands.

With Campbell out, he going to be one of the next up, so we just need to back him in. His future is in his hands he's got to take it by the scruff now.

I’ve never really had any cause to melt about Corey’s use of the ball.

Because his biggest issue to my eye is not getting the ball in the first place.

And I’m really struggling to figure out why he’s stuck being a 10 possession guy. Because he seems to have a lot of positive attributes.

That's just the flank for you. Any player will be limited to 10-15 playing there. Find it 10 times is all good with me aslong as you can do damage with it

Can’t agree with you there.

Justin McI averages 22 disposals. And I think it’s fair to call him a flanker.

A quality winger gets 20+

Corey averages 10.

It’s nowhere near enough.

Tbf I'd call JMac a winger

Did some nice things, but just got it all wrong going into the forward 50 on multiple occasions. 3 or 4 really good chances for goal spurned by either poorly executed kicks or just rushing decision making. He actually has a bit more time than he thinks he does at AFL level (whereas Cleary is at the other end of the spectrum - thinks he has more time than he does).

13 touches is not enough however. He is far from alone in this team of not getting enough of the pill, but we need that role getting 17 or 18 good quality touches a game. Whether he can take that step up, only time will tell.
