Broken thumb, surgery. No timeline.

Essendon forward Will Snelling will require surgery on his thumb after suffering a fracture during the Bombers' 17-point win over West Coast.

The 23-year-old, who has played every game since round one last season, faces a medium-term recovery period.

Head of high performance Sean Murphy said Snelling would have a clearer rehabilitation timeframe once he completes surgery.

“‘Snell’ (Snelling) halfway through the game copped an injury to his thumb (which turned out to be) a fracture,” Murphy told Dons Digital’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.

“He did an amazing job to able to play through that and it just shows you his team-first character to get out there and still perform.

“He’ll go in to have surgery over the coming days, and then post that we’ll have a bit of a timeline on a return to play."

With Smith and Snelling out we will need more forward pressure

Would mind Ambrose to come in as he runs all day

Does not really have anything in common with the role other than he has endurance and is hard at it. He has no small forward craft or midfield craft either.

Maybe ham but he is tiny

Not sure we have anyone else Cahill

I am not a Ham fan as such but Ambrose is not the man for Snelling’s role. very poor ball user under pressure as well which is why truck is not using him advanced a defender.

So who do we have left?

Guelfi forward, Ham into the side, McGrath and Zaka absorb Guelfi, time in defence.

Cupboard is bare, if we pick Thorne in the mid season draft he’s a shout to play given he’s already in Perth

wouldn't mind that option

Guelfi played mostly forward last week

Didn’t look like it to me, happy to be proven wrong though.

Ming is actually a big out for us, no two ways about it. Ironically on the eve of the MSD

Its a good test for our group whether they can cover the loss. It'll be hard because of how much work Snelling is doing in the blue collar pressure system but no system should fall apart due to 1 player missing. Everyone needs to buy in to the gameplan and so far this year it looks like everyone has so hopefully its 1 out 1 in.
