Put aside the Snell frenzy of the last month or so (which, FWIW, is not limited to just on here - it's entire supporter base-wide at this stage, and rightfully so IMO.) This is the first time where we actually just need Snell.

I really don't want a back-line with just Edwards & Hamling (who I think should be a lock to replace McCartin) in it as key defender options. It hamstrings us so much. It gives us a lack of options if a certain match-up isn't working. It takes away from one or all of the games of Mills, Blakey, Serong if they have to play more contested. And it also completely stuffs us if one of Edwards or Hamling were to go down with injury and someone like a Georgiades got off the chain.

We need three keys down back, so the third available tall on the list could be Harrison Ford for all I care, we'd still need him in.

My god that would be diabolical generally running out of defenders!!

Did you have to use the word hamstrings ? Hampers, hinders, holds us back, anything but hamstrings !

When we have more experience around him in the backline possibly?

Snell and Edwards as your two keys against Georgiadis is a tad scary.

This week I would be naming Hamling.

(If Rampe was back I would be naming Snell).
Need both. Can’t go in without 3 key tall backmen.
Cupboard is so bare it’s scary.
****ing injuries

I can stomach Snell’s non selection so long as the dialogue with him is open and transparent. Perhaps with Edwards and Kyle in the backline the coaches don’t want any more ‘juniors’ having to manage things down back and with McCartin and Melican both out it’s not unreasonable to stick with the veteran in Hamling.

However, if I was Snell, the only reason I wouldn’t ask for a trade at the end of the season is if there’s a promise that Rampe is retiring and that Hamling is either gone or is only sticking around in case of emergency.

He is no walk up in any other side He is a listed emergency so he is getting close, just not yet.

We've got so many changes in our backline at them moment, adding another player to debut would make us extremely vulnerable.

I would have been fine debuting Snell if he replaced Kyle, in fact, I would have preferred it, but Edwards, Snell and Kyle all in at once? Nah.

he is only 20, and contracted for next year. As slingshot said, as long as he's aware of why etc..however...with a fit Edwards, McCartin and Pelican next year, where does he come in..Rampes spot? Perhaps we don't see him as a KPD as such, more a 3rd/medium defender..

Mollie Dooker posted some info on him in the preview thread, which gives me a much better feeling about what's going on with him, and what the club thinks of him.

Hit the nail on the head. Like Serong, not quite big enough to take on the monsters and skills like Rampe are incredibly rare but big and athletic enough to take on the likes of Caddy. Definitely likely to be a good third tall maybe instead of Melican who becomes backup for Edwards and McCartin.

I feel like Mollie's insights, as well as Cox's acknowledgment of Snell's form in his presser last week and his promotion to emergency status this week, are all I've needed as someone who is bullish on Snell. I just needed a sign or two that my eyes were not deceiving me and the player who has been so thoroughly impressive in the VFL is not destined for the scrap-heap.

I'll admit that for some reason I was also mistakenly under the impression that he was only signed to the end of this year, not 2027. That's great news.

A few weeks ago I got to watch Snell, Melican, Hamling and Gibbs as our Ressies core group. All different and all good. Hamling very measured and economical. Gibbs every inch up to the standard. Melican had just been dropped and was telling everyone what to do and was a bit frenetic. Snell was full of energy and often taking the interceptor role. Sometimes mistimed it a little (unlike Hamling) but you could see where the improvement could come.
