Hawthorn secures experience and youth

Hawthorn Football Club have selected Wayde Skipper and Jarrod Kayler-Thomson at pick no 13 and 29 respectively in the AFL Rookie Draft held today.

The Club also used pick no 42 to pre-select NSW Scholarship recipient Michael Johnston.

In recruiting Skipper, 26 and Kayler-Thomson, 24, Hawthorn took advantage of the recent rule change that allows clubs to claim two mature-age players over the age of 23.

Standing at 193cm, Skipper is a noted goalkicker and can play in both defence and attack. Having been delisted from the Western Bulldogs at the end of the 2009 season, Skipper began pre-season training with Hawthorn and has impressed with his attitude and application.

General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen spoke about how the 26 year old can bolster Hawthorn’s ruck stocks.

“Wayde is an outstanding athlete and has the ability to play in the ruck, but is also versatile enough to swing into defence or attack” he said.

Re: Wayde Skipper (Rookie)

If Wayde is the best available, then we got our man. I am concerned about his centre ruck work, around the ground he will be more serviceable, due to no-one leaping into him directly, smothering him.

Time will tell, I guess.

Former Bulldog Wayde Skipper will join the Hawks

By Luke Holmesby 11:25 AM Tue 15 December, 2009
HAWTHORN has thrown a lifeline to former Bulldog Wayde Skipper in a bid to address its ruck woes.

The Hawks took the 26-year-old with pick 13 in the NAB AFL Rookie draft and will be hoping he can fill some of the void left by the retired Robert Campbell.

Campbell gave the game away at the end of the season after a long-running battle with knee injury. Young ruckman Max Bailey will miss most of next season after undergoing his third ACL reconstruction following the round 22 loss to Essendon.

If as expected Bailey is placed on the long-term injury list, Skipper could be elevated to the senior list and available to play for Hawthorn's senior side as early as round one.

Hawthorn general manager of player personnel and strategy Chris Pelchen said the club would make that decision closer to the season opener.

Re: 42 Wayde Skipper (Rookie)

How many games next year if he gets elevated fellas?
Depending on Injury's & suspensions IMO he will only get a game if Renouf or Taylor go down!

Re: 42 Wayde Skipper (Rookie)

Surely he's better than Taylor. It'd be hard seeing the Hawks as flag contenders if Taylor plays 22 games this season.

You might want to check out 'Hitouts to Advantage' which is where Taylor shines. That said, Skipper is much better once the ruck contest is over.

Happy to have both at the club.

As he is adept at the hit-outs, pitted with a quality ruck-partner Taylor could become a more valuable player, and his inability to be a force around the ground may not seem such a character flaw.
Unfortunately for Taylor, it seems that the job will fall to Renouf, who despite a premiership medallion has yet to prove himself at AFL level, or mature-age rookie Wayde Skipper, who played only 45 games in six years for the Western Bulldogs.
There is also youngster Luke Lowden and Sam Grimley on the list, but they don't seem ready for AFL football.

Sam Grimley (No. 39) and Ben Stratton (No. 46) lead the Hawks' newcomers, but for them it's a case of first doing an apprenticeship at a club that has also secured Shaun Burgoyne, Josh Gibson, Rhan Hooper and Wayde Skipper.

"They've all had a pretty good introduction to training life over summer, but usually for those sorts of guys, remembering we gave away our early draft picks, it's whether there's an opportunity or not," Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said.
