Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

He's adjusting to a new position. He played a lot more forward last year but more wing this year. But he needs improve his disposal efficiency given how much uncontested ball he gets

Lloyd has had 2nd year blues. BFD ! Happens to plenty of young players who burst onto the scene and have a fair impact in their first year. His composure that was fairly evident last year has been diminished by closer checking by the opposition & referred pressure that has caused some panic with his decision making. There is no reason why this can't well happen to Heeney as well because the opposition will hunt him. This happens to young perspective stars all the time. Its how they handle it and how they are coached to handle it that is the important thing going forward.

With another year of experience under their belts regardless of their 2nd year horrors most players who look good players in their first year go on to have very good careers as better than average players.

Agree. He showed some bursts of form as the year went on that indicate he may be adjusting to the extra load.

Finished strong after his poor form

Second year blues maybe

Maybe trade ait for ZSmith. We have plenty of underperforming mids, we can spare one.

Tempting, but he was one of our best users of the ball last year - give him another year perhaps?

i thought i'd give my opinion on lloyd. I really hope he plays the year in reserves and is then cut. For an outside player he is very slow and his disposal may be accurate at times but he always seems to take the safe option, ie, his kicking is not damaging at all. it is probably due to the trade ban of the last few years that he ever got a start as we needed to replace an inside player with an outside one in our structure. the times he has looked good are when he has come on as the sub and everyone else is tired. i do not believe he is afl standard and if he is in the team then we won't win the premiership this year.

Not many "afl standard" players are p'ship players!

But good to see new poster on here that has been attracted to the new format on here!

Welcome....very harsh however imo

thanks for your welcome. it may be a bit negative but thats just what i've garnered from watching him closely over the last few years. when compared to someone like bradley hill or issac smith who play the same position there seems quite a difference in ability. hill has pretty much the same attributes as lloyd in terms of kicking and endurance but what sets him apart from lloyd is his pace and he seems to kick kore goals as well for a winger. smith is better than both of them.

But I bet you give Gary Rohan a pass with worse kicking and worse endurance than Lloyd. Double standards much?

Welcome and all of that but you couldn't be more wrong...he's no Usain Bolt but he certainly isn't slow. Also, if anything the main criticism with his kicking is that he often tries to bite off too much with regards to taking on a difficult kick. I look forward to bumping your post when he plays his 200th game.

Two very different players though, hard to compare the two. The poster is harsh on Lloyd I agree, but I think the point was while his kicking might be accurate, it isn't particularly damaging. He's not slow, but he's not super quick either. His endurance seems fine. I would say he deserves his spot in the team at the moment for structural reasons as the poster mentioned, but it's not out of the question that he could be overtaken if there are others in reserves showing more promise.

i think the situations are very different. rohan doesn't have the endurance of lloyd but his pace is very damaging. i'm not sure i would call lloyd's endurance damaging because when he gets it his disposal is too safe. he kind of reminds me of paul okon when he played in the midfield for australia. completed a lot of passes but mostly sideways and backwards. i like gary as is obvious but i am not blind to his faults. for all the uncontested possessions lloyd may get compared with rohan i'd hazard a guess that gary's possessions are more effective.

yeah, i think lloyd has been a structural necessity but i think if we are going to go to the next level we need someone like hiscox to get to the level of hill and smith who really have been good for hawthorn the last couple of finals series.

i don't think he's slow but i think he's too slow for his position in the team. on his kicking i just don't agree. last year was a lot worse than the year before from my observation because he played for longer, got tired and missed his targets.

i'd much rather move towers up to the wing permanently (though he needs to improve he's contested play) and use one of the numerous options we have at half forward.

One of the big criticisms on this forum is the quality of kicking. With many of our players I get nervous when they are kicking. In 2014 I wasn't when Lloyd got the ball. In fact I was confident of quality disposal by foot with him. Last year he was not as tidy and I'm not sure why but I think I thought is was like second year syndrome.

Every team has a variety of players and often it's not the quality of your top players but the quality of the bottom 6 that wins or loses the hard games. He is not as good as Smith or Hill but maybe that's why the Hawks have a threepeat.

I haven't seen Saturday's game but I believe he played well.
