Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

Jake Lloyd

DOB: 20 September 1993

Unrestricted free agent would suggest he’s not on huge money. Agree age is a worry as some players drop off soon after hitting 30.
Lloyd plays probably the least physical game on the team, apart from some ground ball gets he typically doesn't do a lot of tackling or 1 on 1 defending. His skillset seems like it should in theory age really well

His biggest attribute is his tank with decent speed plus between his ears. Should be good for 3 years with his frame. 2 + trigger would be perfect, then one at a time if he's still getting it done.
Might have to pay for a nanny so he gets some sleep though.

Happy to give him 3 years with a trigger for an extension for the 4th. He's been incredibly durable & is one of our few experienced defenders. It's likely the end is sooner rather than later for Rampe, so we need Lloyd to stay in the team as an experienced head for an otherwise inexperienced defensive unit. He plays a less abrasive game style than others, which I hope means he has a few good years still left. He's definitely proven me wrong with his late season resurgence in form.

4 years, Swan for life. Make it happen
I like Lloyd, think he's an extremely valuable best-22 player, but not a fan of giving 29 year olds a 4 year deal (he'll be 29 at the start of that deal). 2-3 is enough, he'll know we'll extend him if he's still up to it. Had the same opinion about Parker, but the club did it then, so might well do it again.

SwansProudly posted the interview this afternoon;

Got to say listening to it I got no sense he's moving on.
I think the article somewhat misrepresents the chat with Russell.
My impression is that he is happy in Sydney, happy playing for the Swans, contract will sort itself out at the end of the season and he didn't seem fussed that things wouldn't work out (even allowing for the seeming 'gotcha' moment quoted in the article.)

Lloyd signed his last contract around 21 September 2018. Which was after the Swans season had ended.
Okay. I'm holding you to that. I've had enough drama for today.

Thanks HB. You & Olian have calmed me down somewhat.

I wonder if Lloyd is maybe waiting until the end of the season, as his CV as a player could be improved compared to say right now. If say, he was a podium finisher at the B&F once again (personally I think it's unlikely, but the coaches do love him) and could say he was a premiership player... that could just bump his value up even just a tiny bit.

I feel like that is sort of what Parker did last year. Waited until all the accolades were sorted so his value was at it's maximum. (Late August last year talks were supposedly in no hurry. September 2nd he wins the Bob Skilton Medal. September 7th he re-signs for four years. Make of that what you will.)

Lloyd is an interesting one. May be able to get better $ offers elsewhere whilst we are likely to offer him a deal relative to our list position (that we probably have the pieces to cover him so won’t offer big dollars). Our offer might reflect that.

Bit like Hewett in some aspects.
Can definitely see it happening.

We also could be pushing him a little to look elsewhere without the words being said

Where does a Campbell top 5 play in the 22 next season if team stays like this?

Can’t be just injury cover next season
No disrespect to Campbell, but I hope he is just injury cover next season. If this is our best 22 and he's not in it then I think that's just tough for him.

I want us to have the best team possible and preferably the most senior mature team possible. It's what's needed for consistency that we haven't had most of this year and now it's potentially cost us top two/four.

If that means playing 29 year old Lloyd over the pick 5 in Campbell, I'd be OK with that.

Not over a 4 year deal for a 29 year old hbf

Let’s be honest you yourself said he wasn’t best 22 8 weeks ago , many did

Correct, and then he turned his form around and our defence improved significantly. I know there others who have helped like Fox, Florent etc. But I don't think that makes him any less important to our back-line. They're the 6/7 players who have turned our defence into a very good one that could win a flag. Is it worth messing with that, just for Campbell?

I think he is very replaceable

By Campbell? He has hardly set the world on fire playing in defence. Not sure who else there is...

I also think the back 6/7 are clicking and they have got the chemistry going. It's not that easy to replicate if you keep adding new faces to it. Fox, Florent, Blakey etc are doing well playing alongside Lloyd, and vice versa. Why not keep them together?

He is an average hbf that’s it

Campbell isn’t there atm obviously but he works on it

Besides experience what does Lloyd bring besides cheap possies , speed , kicking skills?

I think he brings composure. He's good for a shank a game but he finds the outlet player from the congestion better than anyone. His "cheap possies" help bring Fox, Florent, Blakey etc into the game and free them up to attack like they do. Someone's gotta win the boring, ugly ball.

I'm less focused on Lloyd as an individual and more on what Lloyd does to make the defensive group as a whole function.

I don't know how long ago all this was, or whether it aligns with your timeline above, but I rather think his turn in form is more about the introduction of Fox and Florent into the backline thank Jake turning his form around. I think their introduction and contribution has allowed Jake to flourish and become more aggressive.

Our backline is really solid now, and I am super happy with it, but I wouldn't be offering Lloyd any more than 2 with a three year trigger.

My only concern in our backline atm is MacInerney's fitness. At times he could hardly break out of a jog last week. Can teams exploit him going forward?
