Player Watch #44 Sydney Stack

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

You can tell from his highlights package that he is a gun, he is more skilled than Walsh .
Stack can take pack marks, take players out, kick goals and is evasive.
You are talking about talent. However, talent alone doesn't bring you success. You must harness your talent and maximise your output to be successful. That requires dedication and devotion to your job. Stacky oozes talent and ability but he is currently missing the other bits that can make you a star. He needs to sort that out quickly.

Yeah, Walsh comparison is weird. That is the first kid in the system since maybe Robert Harvey with an almost physco obsession of pushing himself to the limits with extreme work rate. Add in very good skills and smarts and that equals one of the best kids in the league.

In comparison Stack is copping jabs in the media from his coach about preparation.

Congratulations to the club in the way they are handling this. It was smart giving him a 12 month contract. I'm glad to see they are calling him out privately and publicly on his fitness and work ethic. He'll either respond or he won't. He'll either become a fitter and better player, or he won't. What we're not doing is making excuses for him or allowing him to coast on talent. One year and he'll either break through or be delisted. That's good list management.

I back the club.

A few new quality 18 year olds have just arrived and ready to do the hard work required to get into the seniors. Stack will see them step over him in terms of 'next up' unless he puts in the hard work. Showed good signs towards the end of last season, but one year contracts could be necessary for him. He may 'mature' now he is heading towards mid-twenties. If not, he'll be in the 2's and out the door without ever becoming a regular.
He may be happy 'cruising' and enjoying life. Some are. Frustrating, but reality.

So all you guys that get on my case when I make comments on Syd's running and immediately jump to his defense have just got a dose of Burge's first hand reality so you can stop shooting the messenger.

In individual needs session again today Syd was trailing MJR by so far it wasn't funny, I were not going to put it any training report, as I have mentioned it previously, I were just going to let Syd work on it a few weeks to see where that got him but as Burge commented on it directly it again becomes relevant.

**A funny aside today, Syd was already being paced by one of the other fitness guys and Peter Burge, ( unbeknownst to Stacky ), was prowling the center watching when Burge cried out FFS Stacky! as Syd bent down pretending to do up his shoelaces :ROFLMAO:, someone should tell Syd that trick never works.

I haven't read above article but it sounds like Stack has not put in the running work during the break
Concerning 😟
Not sure if this says a lot about Rioli Jnr either…

Same Walsh who came 4th in the Brownlow last year and had a pretty spectacular season and that’s coming from someone who absolutely despises Carlton

Stack might be more talented but it means nothing if he isn’t prepared to do the work he will just be a player who could of been a superstar but couldn’t get it together off field like a Harley Bennell

He's already performed and helped us win games to make finals in 2019.
He was regularly in the best players.
He got injured that year otherwise he would have a premiership medal.
Not every player is an obsessive fitness/preparation freak like Walsh.

Seems like Stack isn’t even doing the minimum
and if he’s only getting offered one year contracts and club calling him out publicly it isn’t exactly painting a flatting picture

Yes but we knew his background when we drafted him.Patience is the key imo.
I don't want to get into a debate about his upbringing but he's had a shit life and has done well to be playing at an AFL club.
He'll get hungrier when the real stuff starts.

Think it’s getting to the point that the club is getting frustrated, he can’t use his upbringing as an excuse forever and the penny will need to drop at some point or he could be shown the door

He’s a 4th year player now so the new recruits will be looking at him as a SR player and the club will be aware of the message it sends to them

Yes I agree this is a huge year for him.

Wonder if the public comments are a new tactic they are trying, we all know he’s flamboyant and has an ego (not saying that in a bad way) but instead of keeping it in house couple of public comments and a soft jab to that ego might be the rocket he needs

Yes, their has to be a minimum standard for all players so they will have to ride him at times regardless.

We got Stack for nothing and he has huge upside.
He is well worth perservering with for years to come.
He will be a vital asset in finals football.
We got stack for nothing correct in regards to draft picks but he does cost Richmond a shed load of cash in not his salary but everything else attached

I honestly cannot remember another time our fitness guys have been so scathing in their reports about a player specially one that is so talented
just appears to me the club is really starting to run out of patience with stack and a 12 month contract was a good call.

Regarding Connors im not sure many here remember him too much but he was just as if not more talented than stack when the club pissed him off and it relly wouldnt surprise me if Sydney doesnt get another deal at Richmond after this year

or he comes out plays 15+ games has a great season and gets a multi year. some are going the early crow. Its 1st of December FFS

I still believe he will be the best player from his draft year. He did come second or 3rd in the rising star with fewer games than the others.
I believe he will be a better player than Walsh.

Maybe if you mean PSD but your delusional f you believe the entire 2018 draft, He is light years away from even becoming top 5
Sam Walsh
Jack Lukosius
Connor Rozee
Bailey Smith
Ben King
Max King
Tarryn Thomas
Zach Butters
Xavier Duursma
Nick Hind

Just to name a few from the same draft

Maybe have a look and compare where Walsh finished in last years Brownlow compared with Stack

Ok let's see what happens, he got more votes in the rising star than all but 2 of those players and he was injured.
Peter Sumich said he was the most talented player in the draft.

Sumich said he was the most talented WA player. Not most talente player in the draft.
Also I think the comparison to Walsh is ridiculous. Walsh has honed his skills to a point where they are better than Stacks. He has a work ethic Stack will never reach and his impact in a game is light years ahead of Stacky. Walsh is fast becoming a superstar of this competition, Stack is slowly becoming irrelevant.

I have high hopes the penny will drop and Stack becomes a very good player but the comparison to Walsh is laughable.

Sumich also said he was as tough as any Indigenous player he had seen.
Walsh is not a matchwinner but Stack has the potential to win you matches.

If your a 4th year player and the penny hasnt dropped regarding the work required, its likely not going to.
Turning up to this preseason unfit after his dramas last year is a slap in the face to the club.
It's extremely disappointing and i am pleased to hear the club is letting him know it.

Any comparison to Walsh at this stage is laughable. It will be great if Stack could get himself near that level but right now he is closer to being delisted than he is to being among the best young players in the game. Hopefully by the end of the year he has put in the work, secured his spot and made a case to be included in that discussion.

Walsh (far) more likely to win a Brownlow, Stack more likely to win a Norm, and not just because Carlton don't play finals.

Lots of jumping at shadows. Stack's coming from a low way back, that's why we got a top-5 talent for nothing. He's turning up. He'll get there.
