Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

Nup. People are jumping the gun on the weights session. They aren't sparring for Greco Roman Wrestling.

8 players in the gym at once, there are enough squat racks and bars to have one each and not be close to anyone else for the entire session. All equipment will be disinfected between use. No other player will be considered a close contact from the weights session and no player will be isolated because of the weights session.

The session with footys on the other hand and whatever else they have done I have nfi which way they'll go.
2 hours in the same room is as good as 15 minutes face to face.

Its a huge problem that you can test negative one day and positive the next. The 2 week incubation period that health officials are going with means that Conor possibly could have got Covid anywhere in the last 14 days doing something as innocent as filling his car with petrol, and its only just shown up on a test. It seems like the AFL started the season a bit underprepared for this situation which the more you think about it was probably inevitable. They cant just hope this wouldn't happen and then hang us out to dry. In saying that, if it is shown that Essendon as a club are not following protocols in regards to training guidelines and it is proven that Conor himself was breaking multiple protocols, he and the club should have a lot to answer for. Again though, the AFL has started the season hoping this wouldn't happen, when it was probably always likely to happen whether any protocols were broken or not.

I’m not convinced he’s necessarily done anything wrong but I know if I was getting paid 400k + in this situation I wouldn’t be leaving my bedroom let alone my house unless it was for training or playing purposes

I agree, I'm not convinced either. I'm curious if the AFL's rules extend to housemates or family the players are living with... and what about going out to get groceries/necessities?

I think everyone who's bagging him is being a bit harsh. There's over 700 players in the AFL, and the only way to keep them all virus free would be to cut them off entirely from the outside world. The bigger issue is the spike in the community, because if the number of cases keeps increasing then it'll just be a matter of time before we either have more players get infected, or tighter restrictions are imposed again which could put a halt to the season.

How do we know for 100% certain that he didn’t contract it in Ireland?
Yes, we’re being told he likely contracted it here, but is the 14 day incubation period theory absolutely bulletproof? How do we know it can’t be a bit longer in some instances?

He's been back since about the 15th of May. Even if the 14 day thing isn't bulletproof, I'm not sure that 35 days for a low level irregularity to show on the test is very likely.

Incubation period is only for showing symptoms, not for testing. I think you will show a positive within a day or two of contracting, even if you aren't showing symptoms.

EDIT: Actually there is less chance you will test positive if you aren't showing symptoms. But there's a 60% chance you will test positive four days or more after contraction/exposure:

If you get the nasal/throat swab or saliva test, you will get a false negative test result:

  • 100% of the time on the day you are exposed to the virus. (There are so few viral particles in your nose or saliva so soon after infection that the test cannot detect them.)
  • About 40% of the time if you are tested four days after exposure to the virus.
  • About 20% of the time if you develop symptoms and are tested three days after those symptoms started.

Fair enough. I must admit I didn’t realise he’d been back that long.

Well we dont actually know that because we dont know the strict rules, and we dont know exactly what he did.

Everything I've seen to me (and this means nothing because im a supporter so its seen as biased) is that players are allowed to visit family (ill argue to the end of time that a foster family should count here) and he did a house inspection which on the rules that are floating around ive seen was allowed.

But at the end of the day, i don't really care too much about an AFL player testing positive, what i do care about is this narrative is somehow due to Connor or the club being "stupid".
It's a pandemic, what should be worrying people is THAT he got it, this thing is spiking in VIC and we have just had harsher restrictions imposed.
Haven't seen much narrative to suggest that he was 'stupid'... but I don't do twitter. Most people are fairly decent and understanding about it.

By all accounts, it sounds like he was staying within the rules... as grey as they might be.

It'd be fairly tough on him having to deal with all of this, especially when he's so far from home and family. Hope he's OK and that the club everyone else gets around him... as soon as it's safe to do so!

The Essendon hate on SEN is coming through loud and clear.....people calling in think that we have cheated once again ???.
Melbourne and Carlton nuffies want the 4 points at all costs what a joke !.
Neither Gerarld or Dwayne at any point asking if Connor is OK, it's like he went out deliberately to catch this deadly virus.
It's times like these that make really think long and hard about how pathetic some people in our society are.
The lack of compassion is staggering, is the same happening with the nurses, teachers or police that contract this virus ??.
I honestly have lost all faith in the human race, these people are the same people who do exactly the same things but because Connor happens to play AFL he can be abused openly.

Theres a sliding scale of how you judge people in society - people who call into SEN are outliers waaaaaay up one end that are barely factored into calculations

The old Melbourne nuffies calling up believing they should get the 4 points is quite amusing.

both carlton and Melbourne fit the bill perfectly for a pathetic attempt at a free 4 points.

last time Melbourne vs'd a depleted Essendon we ****ing did them in.

I'd be demanding the four points too if an opposition player broke the rules and threatened to derail our season, as is happening to Carlton.

If it can be proven Essendon aren't training within the guidelines set and our players are breaking restrictions, i believe we should forfeit 4 points for any game we cant field a team for. If we are training within the guidelines, none of our players are breaking restrictions and we still get hit with Covid through nothing other than bad luck, that should be on the AFL to reschedule and postpone games. Ollie Wines and BZT getting a weeks suspension for breaking restrictions looks like a very light penalty when you consider what a positive test can do to a club. If its 4 points on the line for breaking restrictions clubs will take them a lot more seriously.

Not sure if it has been posted but this was on Twitter. Virus can shed for a month or so and the swab tests they use have a 30% false negative rate so this is entirely plausible. A bit unlikely though with at least 5 negatives in between. The tests aren't as good as people think they are.

First off, I wish Conor good health and a fast recovery.

However, he knowingly and deliberately breached the COVID-19 protocols. The very protocols that were put in place by the AFL to convince the State Governments to allow the season to restart.

“The Irishman confirmed his breach of protocols to officials on Sunday – he attended an open house inspection and also went to visit family and friends – all despite explicit warnings from the Bombers.”
Look, I have compassion for the other Essendon players and staff, even the fans/supporters. Hey, just think of the staff Essendon have already had to let go because of the pandemic. But poor Conor, he’s the victim in your eyes?

Live by the sword, die by the sword. He needs to be made example of. Should be thrown under every bus available, and not by the AFL, by the Essendon FC. And, I dare say, if he was a Hawthorn flog you would be thinking the same.

Also, comparing a nurse/doctor to a ‘sports star’ that broke protocols to socialise and check-out some real estate, is probably one of the most insulting things I have read on this site in some time.

You and I differ..that's the last thing i would want.
The fact is nothing has been confirmed as to how he came to be positive, as previously stated what if he got from filling up petrol ?.
You a virtually saying that he deliberately broke the rules in place ?.

"He knowingly and deliberately breached the COVID-19 protocols"
Wow what an assumption please give me the facts that you have and the AFL hasn't come out with yet.....

The precedent has been set. 1 week suspension for breaking protocols. I think the AFL as a whole have needed to be taking covid a lot more seriously than that. As for whether Conor has or not, i thought that was still being determined.

"The Irishman confirmed his breach of protocols to officials on Sunday" So he said that "I have breached protocols" or that this is the OPINION of the writer of this alarmist creator and Conor just explained himself of his desire not to sleep under a bridge.

Did you notice that he didn't actually quote the Irishman? What he quoted was Jon Ralph, and Jon Ralph didn't even say that the Irishman confirmed he had breached protocol. It's just a journo with third hand info trying to make a name for himself.

What Jon Ralph actually said was that McKenna inspected a house and visited his host family.

It's up to the AFL to check that against their own guidelines and figure out whether they regard that as a breach, given that the players are actually allowed to inspect a house for the purpose of buying or selling, and they are also allowed to visit family.
