Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

On what has been reported he doesn't deserve the lashing he is copping.
Looking for a place to live and seeing your foster family, two pretty normal and important things.

What pisses me off is the anger directed at him for this when we have shopping centres bursting with people and businesses getting pissy when they can't have people in the office. Instead of the learning experience this should be that this thing is still around we have "but he ruined my Football!!"

Probably took more care than most people are and now he's the face of it.
Slipknot had it right, People=Shit

I'm not going to climb into him for what he's done but he's broken the rules, plain and simple. AFL players have stricter rules than the average punter to make sure the season keeps going, he actively broke those rules, twice....

Why cant our club and its players just follow the rules ffs.

Well we dont actually know that because we dont know the strict rules, and we dont know exactly what he did.

Everything I've seen to me (and this means nothing because im a supporter so its seen as biased) is that players are allowed to visit family (ill argue to the end of time that a foster family should count here) and he did a house inspection which on the rules that are floating around ive seen was allowed.

But at the end of the day, i don't really care too much about an AFL player testing positive, what i do care about is this narrative is somehow due to Connor or the club being "stupid".
It's a pandemic, what should be worrying people is THAT he got it, this thing is spiking in VIC and we have just had harsher restrictions imposed.

And at the end of the day it's only football. Who really cares. If the season got cancelled and there wasn't a premier what has actually been lost? Nothing of value. Considering you can't go to it, to me it's just like watching a movie or a TV series.

They've turned something good into we have to slot this into 2020 if it's the last thing we do. Let's limit the quarters.

If the AFL was true to their word with saying it's 153 matches not 17 weeks. They postpone any game affected by covid because it's not 17 weeks. But obviously bombers blues needs to go on because blues are showing form. Magpies the week after needs to because that'll be a rating boom and we can't delay that to an unknown time.

It's all money to the afl.

I might be in the minority but this season is a waste of time and for the first time in my 37 years I haven't known who's won on the weekend for the last 2 weeks

I’m not convinced he’s necessarily done anything wrong but I know if I was getting paid 400k + in this situation I wouldn’t be leaving my bedroom let alone my house unless it was for training or playing purposes

If you want there to be normal football in 2021 and beyond, then the compromised, abridged and artificial version of it has to happen this year to keep the league afloat.

This - We are focusing on these two things that he did, Potentially, outside of the guidelines.

But he was 100% allowed to go shopping, which isn't being talked about, and is far more likely where he got it.

The northern suburbs are a hot spot so he could have picked it up from anywhere.

Bloke is 2 continents away from home and the AFL want to hang him?! Seriously, it's a disgeace..my family live in WA and I just want to visit them but I can't.

I don't blame him...if the AFL needs such stringent rules for a season to resume then the problem isn't the player it's the AFL itself.

What price do we put on a human beings mental welfare?

Issue is Gil has gone on about this being about playing 153 games not 17 rounds, meaning they could deal with situations such as this.

Yet his sidekick Frankenstein, Andrew Dillion says we will have to play with missing players. Move the game instead you dick head. This sets a precedent that could screw up entire season in that what happens if this occurs in a final or one of final rounds that could cost a team their season?

Gil even said yesterday that we can extend the season to Nov or even Dec if needed...ok so why punish us for two games? Defer the Carlton game and move Pies clash. Wasn’t this also the point of the shorter quarters?

Can you see the AFL lessening their punishment if it’s proven he picked it up at the supermarket?

No but the AFL are as much as fault for pushing for the resumption of the season despite the risk of someone picking this virus up. People are allowed to go to inspect a property and have people around so I am yet to see how he has broken the rules.

Been interesting to compare the reporting on this to that coming out of the US/Canada with the NHL.

Since they went back to small-group training for players several NHL teams have had players test positive, and in each instance the reporting went along the lines of "3 players from team X have tested positive...", no names were given. At the end of last week a star player from one of the bigger teams tested positive and was the first (and I believe only) player to be identified by name. The general reaction was to criticize the reporter who named him, as it is a priviate medical matter and medical records shouldn't be aired in public without permission.

The NHL in general is much less forthcoming with injury matters than the AFL (most injuries are just listed as 'upper body' or 'lower body'), but as it isn't football related should Conor's name have been keep out of reporting, or do we have the 'right' to know exactly who tested positive?

Without knowing the NHL media pack. Could that be a cultural difference between its media and our media which is increasingly shrilled and click-bait driven.

That's certainly some of it, as the NHL media is more spread out (local outlets covering local teams) rather than just a few large organisations generating everything and needing to fill air time/column space.
Possibly also that the NHL and most media had realised it was pretty much inevitable that multiple players would test positive so there was a less of a 'gotcha' feel to the whole thing...

Yep, agree. Isn't the real point the utter stupidity of the club allowing all back line players to do weights together. Players only do what they're told. Contact tracing results will be interesting - whether its the house inspection. Think victoria needs to step up its community testing again.
Nup. People are jumping the gun on the weights session. They aren't sparring for Greco Roman Wrestling.

8 players in the gym at once, there are enough squat racks and bars to have one each and not be close to anyone else for the entire session. All equipment will be disinfected between use. No other player will be considered a close contact from the weights session and no player will be isolated because of the weights session.

The session with footys on the other hand and whatever else they have done I have nfi which way they'll go.

Pretty sure those in the AFL and DHHS have NFI and are just making things up too tbh
