Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Loved his game. Silky skills in general, and has that ability to just make space for himself in traffic. Think he could be really good for us, just have to hope his body holds up. Will be interesting to see if he keeps his spot with Changa, Rioli and Burgoyne back in the side.

Rnd 2 vs Geelong

Carl Peterson

10 kicks
9 handballs
3 marks
1 hit out
5 frees for
2 frees against
4 tackles (including the rarest of the rare, a HTB against Ablett :) )

Carl continued his excellent start to his AFL career, with a solid game against the reigning premiers.

Highlights included the aforementioned tackle, as well as a spectacular grab in the middle of the park when he was off- balance and out of position, pulling down a nice one hander...

I will be stunned if he is not elevated to the senior list for 2011.

Go Carl

NB Thanks Galon for the pic...

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Bloody good angle I go there. Would you believe I shot that with a standard lens? Hard to tell, eh?

Carlos Diego Peterson, please contine down this wonderful little path of glory. You're bringing smiles to many Hawk faces ( and tears to many Tigers').

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Carl Peterson, stats vs Western Bulldogs, Rnd 3

20 disposals
(10 kicks, 10 handballs)
8 marks
3 hit-outs
5 tackles

Another solid showing from Carl..some good lead-up marks, and quality work on the ground. His form for the first three rounds has been, if not spectacular, extremely pleasing...actually, it's well above 'extremely pleasing'; it has been genuinely exciting to see this bargain basement player deliver some of the things we had heard about him pre-season.

A couple of things stand out.

One, he plays on immediately after every mark, even when he seems to be surrounded by opposition players...but does not get caught. I have been watching him, waiting for him to get coralled, but he has shown himself to be extremely elusive in close space. If Cyril wasn't such a ridiculously high benchmark, we would be singing Carl's praise as one of our most elusive players in close.

Two...worries that he might not like the physical stuff have been unfounded so far. He has regularly thrown himself into the bottom of packs. Considering his slight frame, the physical state could be an issue this year.

Stay fit, and keep going Carl

That is very very true. Cyril's freakish ability has seen Carl sneak somewhat under the radar but when you get to see the boy in action, he is something special as well. His evasive skills appear to be pretty good as illustrated by his ability to not get caught when choosing to play on after a mark, and what a leap! Sandilands, watch out, 211cm might not be enough against our not-so-secret weapon. I am hoping he doesn't get crunched or bumped by any bigger bodied forwards as he does appear rather light-on, but having said that i would thought the same about rioli but when junior ran into Cross(?) on the weekend and bowled him over while managing to bounce off him and keep running, perhaps Carl might possess a similar such resilience.

He is also keeping the fringe players honest and making them work for their spots as he looks like he's got himself a spot in the 22 for the time being.

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Quickly becoming one of may favourite players to watch, very hard at the footy or the man with the footy, plays with no fear at all (as evident in lead up to Cyril's first goal vs Dogs) but still has the flair, evasivness and skill to hit up a forward on both sides of his body.

Carl is a jack-in-the-box and could be absolutely anything considering his first three games in the AFL.

Very exciting, lets all just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

I don't understand why there is not more talk about him. Being in our top 5 players for sure and this his in his first AFL season. Geniunly as excited about as I was about Cyril in his first few games. This guy can be one of the best players in the AFL, if his not already. Apparently in WAFL he went in the ruck against Mark Seaby from Sydney and won 4 out of 5 hitouts. It's amazing to have player who can have such an ability jumping, but is also just as good at ground level. Not too mention his kicking, from both feet, is outstanding to say the least. Add his is ability to kick it off one foot with a high degree of technique, will make him an extremely dangerous player.

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

I reckon there will be in the coming months, Roby. Players tend to slip under the radar a bit when the team doesn't win the match as we spend more time trying to analyse where we went wrong, what can be improved, game structures and so forth rather than noticing players who are exceeding expectations. I'm sure he's been noticed by us all and that we're quietly excited but have been weighed down a bit by the losses. His performances have been pretty impressive against quality sides and appears extremely versatile and i look forward to seeing what he can do in the coming weeks when hopefully the hawthorn side as a whole starts firing and punishing other sides.

A great elevation this year and could well find himself in the 22 all year at this rate. It's good to see him leapfrog a lot of our fringe players as well as it forces them to better themselves if they want to break into the senior side.

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Carl Peterson, Rnd 7

9 kicks
5 handballs
8 marks (including a great semi-hanger pack mark)
3 hit-outs

1 goal, 2 behinds. Lovely goal from a tight angle.

A good return to the firsts, after a short spell (one week) at Box Hill

Carl continues his growth as an AFL footballer. He has made a genuine claim to a first 22 spot, particularly with the lack of form shown by many established players. Some vital pace and elusiveness under pressure.

Still small, and tank will develop. He may alternate between Box Hill and Hawthorn, but hopefully will remain a consistent firsts player.

Re: 48. Carl Peterson (Rookie)

Carl Peterson, update.

Delisted at end of 2010 season after playing 17 games during the year.

Debut Round 1 2010 win against Melbourne.

Endured like the next 6 rounds of losses before joining the stunning turn around to make the 2010 finals although Carl was not selected for the game in Fremantle.

An enigmatic person,a prodigious talent, Carl enjoyed playing football yet never really applied himself off field in the way a Lance Franklin has and embrace training and train hard.

His first year as a rookie he spent mainly in the rehab squad, always injured to some degree.

2010 saw him overcome those problems and to some at the club was our answer to a Liam Jurrah of Melbourne. A real X factor in games. Not that tall - about 183cm but had a verticle leap to be believed. So good was the leap he could at a pinch compete in ruck duels. Equally good with the ball off either foot he oozed football class.

Whatever the reasons for Carl's delisting at the end of 2010 season it should be noted that no other club drafted him in 2011.

On a personal note having meet Carl at training he was a lovely young man with a smile a mile wide who was a pleasure to watch in especially kick to kick or turn and shoot long for goal. He had some good times, some happy times at Hawthorn but in the end that could not save him.

The Football world lost something with Carl's leaving. I don't think he really understood or maybe didn't want to know just how good he could be. Always felt he was holding himself back from really exploding out there on the field. Hawthorn's loss, Carl's loss.

I think that Carl Peterson is playing for Old Carey in the VAFA this year.

Carl's new dawn

Michael Gordon
May 21, 2011.

FOR CARL Peterson, tonight's Dreamtime at the MCG will be much more than an opportunity to be part of the game that has become an important milestone in Australia's reconciliation journey.

The former Hawk has three reasons to be excited about his first appearance on the MCG turf since a season that included an abundance of highs ended with an awful low - his sudden, enforced departure from Hawthorn last year."

Former Hawk Carl Peterson starting anew at Northern Blues

EXCITING forward Carl Peterson will use this season with the Northern Blues to try to relaunch an unfulfilled AFL career two years after it was ended by Hawthorn.

Peterson, 24, signed with the Victorian Football League club last week after missing out on an AFL berth at the rookie draft despite a solid 2011 season with Old Carey.

The enigmatic left-footer, born in Meekatharra, Western Australia, burst on to the scene in 2010 with 17 games at the Hawks but was delisted after reportedly struggling with the rigours of being an AFL footballer.

If he asked to be drafted by Hawthorn, would you want him back?
Chubbs!
Tough decisions those, whether to give a player a second shot when they've already walked out on the game. Once bitten, twice shy seems to be the attitude of many these days and it's hard to disagree when you take emotion out of the equation.
