I am so well and truely over current affairs shows. There was one particular "story" on Today Tonight that really got my goat tonight, and that was their "report" on 4WD safety.

I was particularly outraged by the comment "if you know how to drive them properly, 4wds are the safest vehicles on the road". And then they proceeded to show the viewers all of the 4wds wonderful safety features. Which completely defeated the whole purpose of the opening of the story which was to point out how dangerous 4wds are when they hit OTHER cars. You'd probably be fine if you were sitting in the 4wd, wouldn't ya, with all its safety features?

I'm sorry to rant at everyone but I'm really jack of Toorak Tractors on the roads. You can't see past them, and usually the drivers are really inconsiderate. They should have their own parking section in shopping centres because nobody else can see if any cars are coming.

Anyone else agree with me??

i completely agree... can't STAND them...
all these 4WDs that have never seen the outback in their lives! let alone ever gotten dirty!
and u know they sell fake dirt now  so it LOOKS liek u've been somewhere interesting!

Toorak Tractors, I know them all to well. Why do people who live in an urban or built up enviroment require an automobil that is designed for mountin trekking or the out back? Is it some kind of superiority complex or somehing? Bloody ridiculous if you ask me.

I only have a problem with those that use their 4WD to bully and intimidate other road users. If people use them to get around they are fine. But when they get the power trip and thinkt hey own the bloody road comes the problem.

Why have a 4WD if you drive around the streets? It's a useless vehicle unless you go offroad. Just makes it harder for other road users, and causes more carnage if you crash into other vehicles.

Yeah, I love 4WD's but I hate half the people that drive them.... rich buisness women.... rich buisness men... never hitting the 4WD tracks at all! Bastards!

First person to come out with a Melbourne/4WD joke gets it.

Maaaaaaate you shoulda seen 'em parked all over West Footscray on Sat arvo. I went to visit a friend in Creswick st (Just off Barkly) & saw half a dozen.

Not that there's anything wrong with that of course!

Heres a bit of a story for you all. Bout 1994 when my family and I went to the Murray River for the Queens birthday weekend in the old family rodeo we came across a family obviously from the city in a 4WD. The track was slippy and my dad was driving along it fine, got through a large puddle which had gone across the track. Just after we had gone through it this family came along.

They stopped us and asked my dad to drive their 4WD past the puddle........but they asked him to not go through it and instead he had to go around it.

But, there were also a lot who came along by train and probably couldnt afford to by themselves a snag.

I just think the Melbourne/4WD thing is a bit exaggerated.

4WD's do annoy, there is no point to them really. I understand that they are just another vehicle but they're bloody big. What's the need apart from using them to go outback. I admit they are cosy though!

Nothing wrong with 4WD's. Its the people who don't drive them properly

Phil, I think we can excuse you a 4WD in the NT. In Melbourne they're ridiculous.

4WD's??? Ask crows supporters about them....most of them have got one...god knows why!
I dont see the point in people buying 4WD's if they have no plans at all on ever going camping/bush travelling of some sort. Why bother at all??
Its just as bad as those tools that buy Ute's and have a wing put on the back.....they will never actually use the Ute for whats its for....and Utes look f'n ridiculous with a rear spoiler!!

Well, I live in the Perth suburbs, do a lot of city driving, and we have a FWD.

But, I've also been round Australia twice in it & it's predecessor. And through the centre. And up Cape York Peninsula. The Canning Stock Route. Drive to Broome yearly and other general offroad stuff. Though overall it's used far more often for normal driving than real 4WDing. I'll admit that. But I'll be damned if they're going to raise the licensing fees or limit registrations on me! I mean how do you decide just who is entitled to a 4WD and who isn't?

Look, they piss me off too when people who honestly have no need for them drive them (badly) in traffic, but penalising the drivers is no answer. Perhaps a 1 day 4WDing course or something should be required for each purchaser, for any people planning to drive it?

btw, how are they more dangerous on the road than the suped up sporty type cars that are driven just as irresponsibly?

incredibly wasteful machines

use too much fuel.

too much steel rubber and plastic is consumed in making them.

they leave a massive, heavy and stupid footprint on the face of the earth

they are proudly and gormlessly inefficient.

they pump out way too much greenhouse gas.

if one hits you - you're dead.

The ultimate symbol of conspicuous consumption - obviously owned as some kind of 'status symbol'

I wonder if anyone who owns one has ever stopped to consider the massive waste of precious resources these machines truly are ?

probably not - people who love 4WDs usually don't give a sh't about the environment.

which is kinda ironic - a 4WD vehicle is supposed to make it easier to escape the city and get out to enjoy the spendlours of the countryside !

cheers
