NOT sure if many of you caught Sam Mitchell from the Hawks on SEN this afternoon. Was listening during my lunch hour (well, half hour!)
Was making the point that it wasn't until after 50 games or so that young players finally start feeling comfortable within themselves and start producing consistent quality football.
His message was - as the Hawks did previously - you just need to persist with these youngsters, ride the ups and downs and eventually they will grow.
He added that probably only one player at the Hawks (and he's not the one you all think) played consistently good football from very early on til game number number 50 or 60 without any real fluctuation. His name Grant Burchall.
I read on here most weeks - particularly Thursdays - of how Edwards needs a stint back at Coburg, or Riewoldt, or White .... and heard for years of divided opinions on Tambling, Deledio etc. Use the Hawks as a guide...it ain't going to happen overnight.
The likes of Riewoldt and Edwards are going to have their quieter games, but we damn need to persisit with them. While a player like Tambling should really be starting to put it all together and I think he is almost there!!
We tend to be pretty impatient us Tiger supporters!

Fully agree, although I'd also add that 50 isn't some 'magic' number..Different players will develop and get comfortable at different speeds.

Probably significant that 50 games will take 3-4 seasons though, and that by then they'll be around 21 and more physically developed.

The difference between us and the Hawks were a couple of seasons ago is that our young Players are playing well enough to hold a spot in the side.

Yep, it's ano-brainer. And the more your club is struggling, the more games your young blokes might need to start to get comfortable at the top level. Heard a Blues fan on the radio this morning bagging Bryce Gibbs - think he's played 30 games. Unbelievable. Some people's expectations are so unrealistic it's incredible. I think those people see someone like Joel Selwood excel early days and expect every high draft pick to do the same. It sure helps if you slot into a gun team which is chockers with brute strength.

Sage words Goldy ... sage words :thumbsu:

Edwards and Riewoldt are the least of our worries. Both will be long-time players.
However, getting 50 games into JON? That would at least provide some comedy.

Mark my words tugga! Ye`of little faith. If he fails to get to 50 I will shout you a slab of Tassie's finest. Of course if he does....over to you

No need tugs old mate. Been there done that myself so made the offer in full awareness of my obligation. I noticed you have skipped the part where he plays 50 games and I win...what you gonna buy me?
Mt Gay rum. Shipped in nice little wooden box. But it won't happen.
