Is this new speed limit a national thing? Or just a treat for Perthites?

Personally I can't see it making any difference, given that the majority of accidents aren't caused by cars travelling safely at the speed limit.... All I can see is a stupid speed limit that's between gears, will slow down traffic even more, cause frustrating delays and therefore frustrated people and muck around with the gearboxes of many cars

So, my question is, do other states have a 50km/hr speed limit in built up areas? And if so has it had an effect on the road toll and accident rates?

Hey Maude :D

I think it applies to all states but i do think its annoying as it is right between 3rd and 4th gear and you sit there overevving your car....

They changed it last year from 60kph to 50kph in residential areas here in Victoria, and I'd say itj is goin' well, but I don't know the road toll figures yet...

The Hitman

Yeah, I hear the road toll is still higher than last year anyway, but apparently is is supposed to reduce the amount of injuries as well.

But we have had it in Vic for a while now, not that many people actually go 50 though.

More political correct bulls-hit from another stupid Government bereft of REAL ideas.

AS IF people doing 60 km/h are the ones killing pedestrians on the streets anyway?

It's the people doing 80 in 60 zones that kill people - and if they'll do 80 in a 60 zone, WHAT MAKES THE IGNORANT GIT POLITICIAN who came up with this idea think they won't travel at 80 in a 50 zone.

You always know when a council/Government has no frigging idea when they start making stricter road rules.

How about getting the police to, I don't know, POLICE the frigging laws we've already got instead of making life more difficult for drivers who obey the rules that already exist. If someone is 80 in a 60 zone then FINE THEM, don't alter the bloody limit that the person is ignoring anyway.

Of course, if you want the electorate to think you're doing something worthwhile then the best thing to do is make some pointless decision that won't affect the budget much, and contributes nothing, but will impress that git-variety of parent/voter who refuses to take responsibility for where their kids are.

HERE'S A FRIGGING IDEA! How about teaching kids NOT TO RUN OUT onto the road? Is that too simple?

The problem with this country isn't a lack of SAFETY - it's a lack of RESPONSIBILITY! If people want their children to be safe then keep a bloody eye on them.

I don't want to run over kids either - hell, it might chip the paint on the Falcon - so I drive at 60. And driving at 50 wouldn't make any frigging difference at all!

It is just another revenue raiser, a new way to screw more money out of drivers, trying to stay on 50kmph is really difficult, especially if you are going down a hill, you are going to have to put the brakes on the whole way down, more wear & tear on your car, another expense.

Agreed with the ideas of better teaching our the kids on what to do, but if those people going 80 in the 60 zones now do 80 in the 50 zones they will lose their license cause you can't go 30 over the limit. So I guess there is a little bit of a deterent, but the chances of police actually setting up cameras in the 50 zones is fairly remote.

Its true.
Just like mobile phones while driving.

Next we know it, there will be a rule that you cant change the radio station while driving, or put a tape in.

You cannot turn your driving lights on while driving, you must pull over to turn them on (or off).

What about, you are not allowed to talk to any of the occupants in the car?

What about smoking in the car while driving .. no no

Well theyve changed some residential areas in SA to 40km/h just in side streets.
i havent heard any plans of them changing the complete speed limit to 50 here tho

It does sit in between gears doesn't it.

Like in my Lamborghini Diablo, it sits right in the middle of first and second! Frustrating!!!

Agreed TT

The best idea would be to have no speed limits at all, anywhere!! - open slather on the roads, bigger cars, bigger bull bars (stops those kiddie paint chips anyway!), any speed you want and make it a free for all!!!

Survival of the fittest, fastest and biggest I say :D

Cheers

It isnt the complete speed limit.

It is 50 km/h in all residential areas basically. Or if not marked otherwise.

So if their are no speed limit signs it is 50km/hr

I can appreciate why they are bringing this policy in (to reduce deaths) but there is so much confusion with this new 50km/h for perth -- what exactly defines a built up road? (I read it's already been introduced in thr eastern states)

Has anyone seen the ads on TV regarding the new speed change? The cyclist is driving in the middle of the road and not the left side, then there are all these little kiddies running across the road.

Yeah, it sux. When I take my F1 street car out, I can't even get out of 1st gear, really annoying.

He is right though, altough 50 sits ok in 3rd around 3000-3500rpm, not too annoying

have you people notice many signs still say 60? i agree the people doing 60k aren't the ones ones killing pedestrians on the streets.i do think going 50k is to slow no many people stick do it,i have notice my parents still do 60k most of the time.

Still 60 km/h here in the NT, although they are thinking of changing it.

Personally I don't think 10 km/h does much more.

Has anyone seen the ad with the comparisons of the 60 km/h and the 50 km/h where a little kid crosses and at 50 the driver is able to brake in time. But at 60 km/h the driver runs the kid over.

However, if the driver was doing 60 km/h he woulda passed the kid before anyway :D
