Retired #54: Sam Grimley

"Saturday doesn't mean we take a break"

Considering we have about 8 Saturday games this year, I am pleased to hear we wont be taking those days off

I support this signing, I hear the criticism about Sam lacking defensive skills and not being AFL standard but if he sits up forward and supports Joey, SMc and Brown then this might turn out being a good selection.

Probably the pick up I'm most excited for. Good looks.

Worth grabbing. Ethan will not agree but he is a handy back up tall in a thin pool and will prove handy for the VFL side at the least. Who knows he may step up.

Not sure what Bombers are gaining here. They should hardly be picking players for the VFL squad which is all Grimley will be useful for in reality.

Good forward with a pretty decent kick, strong mark, lacks footy smarts and goes missing a lot, and I don't think the word defend is in his vocabulary. I can only think that the choices for ruckman/ forwards at the second string leagues are running very thin.

Regardless good luck to the you man. I honestly do wish with him the best and I hope he proves me very, very, very wrong.

You're right. We really have a wealth of other options. Like... uhh...

And also... hrmm

Name a better key forward option out there.

We'll have Gunston instead.

I hear people say he lacks defensive skills but as a forward, surely his first job is to take a mark and kick a goal. He has not been recruited to be Essendon's main focal point but more as a third forward.

He might have played two poor VFL GF's but that applies to the Box Hill side as a whole and again to be leading VFL goal kicker would suggest that he doesn't go missing that often. Has he is now 25, he should start to show some decent footy and regarding the lack of footy smarts wouldn't be out of place at Essendon in recent years.

....and the only forward in modern footy who may be forgiven for not having a good defensive side to his game is the main focal point. All others need to be able to chase, harass, not get exposed going the other way.

Goes to show how shallow the pool is right now.

If there was a tall forward out there capable of being anything more than decent on an AFL list, they'd already be on an AFL list.

I agree that the talent pool is shallow, this has become pretty clear since the comp was expanded to 18 sides and ideally a forward would chase and harass, even the greats like Dunstall did it.

I remember one Jenkins who couldn't get a game at Essendon, now is an important part of the Adelaide forward line, plenty of players have improved at their second club, just as many talented ones have never taken their chances at any club.

Big difference in the profiles between Jenkins and Grimley.

There may be but Jenkins was clearly unable to get a game at Essendon, for reasons I've never known but clearly he has taken his chance at Adelaide.

Fact is Grimley has (as a key forward/ruck) sat behind Franklin, Roughead, Hale, Ceglar and to a lesser extent Schoenmakers and Gunston for the past 4-5 years.

He may just take this chance and produce for you guys. If so, well done to all.

That's more like it

Not really, remember throughout the naughties players like M.Williams, Brad Fisher, B.Johnson, M.Le Cras, Corey Jones, Daniel Motlop, Scott Welsh even Milne lead their forward lines. That 6 foot full forward has gone out of vogue but they are out there if teams want them and apparently Clarkson sees value as he drafted Hardwick last year.

We had a shedload of tall forward alternatives at the time.

Probably because he was on the rookie list and we had no need to elevate him to the senior list.
