I don't understand why there is such a complete contradiction between the AFL's aim of slowing the pace of the game down to reduce injuries and the umpires and rules committee's jihad against anything that might create a stoppage. The quick play on is just another of these contradictions and it seems that the amount of time gets shorter each year to the point where you almost have to play on straight away. End result is forward presses, zones and the like which are ugly to watch.

Commentators, and most neutral supporters, almost always barrack for the team behind.
I understand that, but cheering "Yes, yes, yes!" is a tad excessive IMO.

Didn't realise it was as short as that - have noticed though as the season has worn on, umpires are calling playon from marks/freekicks remarkably quickly. Players only have to make the smallest of movements off the line and playon is called.

Perversely the occasions when they are slow and the player on the mark reacts they often call a 50.

Also when a player takes a mark inside 50 on an angle they always walk back to improve the angle (i.e move off the line) but playon is never called. Why?

Because they're idiots.

As for the thread topic - WCE hard done by, since when do you got 6 seconds from the mark? Take into account he had to run back to actually take the kick, and he probably had 3 seconds max to be in position.

Plenty of time IMO, we want to keep the game moving, 10 seconds + is too long, 6 seconds is more than enough time to weigh up your options IMO, Hurn lacked awareness, simple as that.
This.

It's not as though Eddie Betts got him immediately Hurn didn't even move forward. Can't believe you made a thread about this Carlton players were also called to play on quickly too they just didn't make the same error as Hurn.
