World Cup spurs early start
22 May 2002 Herald Sun
From AAP
NEXT month's AFL clash between Richmond and the Kangaroos will start earlier in a bid to accommodate World Cup soccer fans.
AFL Football Operations Manager Andrew Demetriou said the round 11 match on June 7 had been brought forward from 7.45pm (AEST) to 6.45pm (AEST) for Australian sports lovers wanting to watch the telecast of the World Cup showdown between England and Argentina.
To also support AFL fans, Demetriou said the match at Colonial Stadium would be telecast live as part of that round's coverage.
"The World Cup occurs once every four years, and if we can accommodate our broadcast partner and all other sports fans without causing too much disruption, then we are happy to do so," Demetriou said.
The Kangaroos have agreed to the altered time and the Nine Network has agreed to promote the early start to ensure Kangaroos and Richmond fans are fully aware of the change.
