The Rothmans Films were great in the 60's to early 70's. A few of them have survived and are great archival resources, I have copies of some of them including this one.

In the early days the only footage that seems to have really survived are the Cinesound newsreels which were shown in Cinemas prior to films starting in the days before TV. These are usually just a few minutes and the games surviving are primarily Grand Finals. Most GF's from 1929-56 are covered on these, the only earlier footage I have seen is 1909 and 1913. Much of it was released on the VFL On Film issues through AFV.

In the late 40's Ted Waterford (an enterprising Essendon committeeman) started making colour film of up to 30min of football. He produced films on Collingwood's trip to South Fremantle and the 1950 GF amongst others that I have got, I'm not sure how many he made all up though.

The Rothmans films started coming out in competition to TV stations. I think the colour footage from the 1958 GF might be Rothmans. Other Rothman's colour film copies that I have include 1969 GF (25min), 1972 GF (27min) and 1973 GF (28min).

Once colour TV came in the films stopped. The 1974 GF was the first that Ch7 filmed in colour, even though colour TV didn't start technically until March 1 1975.

Another bit of footage that would interest a St.Kilda fan is the post 1966 season Shell film titled "Shell Sportlight On Football" and includes Verdun Howell and Ross Smith showing training techniques to schoolboys and runs for about 19min.
