What albums did they record/release before Freddie Mercury died and which one of them would you recommend me buying? :)

Queen didn't do any more recordings under the name of Queen as far as i know, aside from tribute concerts.

I'm pretty sure that the Taylor, May and Deacon may have pursued some form of solo careers, or got together under a different name.

So pretty much everything Queen recorded was done before Freddie died. Not everything was released before however.

Which one would I recommend you buying??? all of them :)

Both Greatest Hits are just pure quality, but that is expected of a great band like Queen. A night at the opera is a great album for someone looking for something different.

"Sheer Heart Attack" is probably also my favourite, and "Jazz" has some interesting cuts on it but is a bit patchy.

For a new fan, hard to go past Greatest Hits I (for the early stuff) and Greatest Hits II (for the later stuff).

Ok well I have to buy a Queen album that was released before he died...it's for my dads g/f's Christmas present and that's what she wants...so which should I get? :D

Personal favourite is "A night at the Opera". Apart from Bohemian Rhapsody its got great songs like I'm in love with my car, '39, Prophet Song and death on two legs. The only song I cannot stand is You're my best friend. Cheeeeeeeeeesy.

I'm under the impression that parts of Made In Heaven were done after Freddie died, as in guitar, drums etc. Obviously Freddie didn't do any vocals after he died...
You should probably avoid the first 2 albums, and probably not Flash Gordon or Hot Space, and stick with the classic mid 70's stuff - Night at the Opera, Day At The Races.

All but the last album "Made in Heaven" and "Queen Greatest Hits III" were released before Freddie Mercury's death. There is also an album called "Queen Rocks" which is a compilation of the better rock songs that they've produced.

Some great albums that I've played a few times over the years are:

Sheer Heart Attack (Killer Queen, Now I'm Here)

A Night at the Opera (Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, I'm in love with my car)

A Day at the Races (Tie Your Mother Down, Somebody to Love, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy)

News of the World (We will Rock You, We Are the Champions, It's Late, Spread Your Wings)

Jazz (Fat Bottomed Girls, Don't Stop Me Now, Bicycle Race)

The Game: (Play the Game, Another one Bites the Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Dragon Attack, Save Me)

Liked "Queen" and "Queen II" as well.

The 80's wasn't so bad either.

Hot Space had a few good songs (Under Pressure and Las Palbras De Amor stand out).

The Works (Hammer to Fall, I Want to break Free, Radio Ga Ga)

A Kind of Magic (One Vision, A Kind of Magic, Who wants to Live Forever)

The Miracle ( I Want it All, The Invisible Man, Scandal)

agreed

If you're buying for a Queen fan, maybe you should find out what she HASN'T got, and then perhaps find out if there's a particular reason why that album wasn't bought...

Wow what a top bunch of songs.
Im a great Queen fan and each bracket conjures up a time/place for me when I was a pub crawling animal.

I could go for a Night at the Opera but Ill go for Jazz!

Anecdote about night at the opera and day at the races.

Both named after Marx brothers movies.

Legend is Groucho Marx once met freddy and pointed it out - then said 'by the way, our next film is called "Rolling Stones Greatest Hits"

Innuendo was actually the last Queen album recorded, it was released in 1991 the same year Freddie Died.
Some pretty powerful lyrics on that album.

The two best of albums basically contain everything you would ever want if you are not a dedicated fan. It has all the big hits and strong album tracks that the casual observer would need to have a perspective of their career. The one song that is sadly omitted from those two compilations is "Tie Your Mother Down" which is a great Queen rocker and one of my personal faves.

"Brighton Rock" isn't on there either, which I thought was disappointing.
