Here's a question for you Hawks fans. There are several obvious answers to this question, but let's see if anyone gets the answer I'm looking for:

Albert Hyde
Alec Albiston
John Peck
Peter Hudson
Leigh Matthews
Jason Dunstall

What feat do all of these players share in common?

When they retired they were Hawthorn's leading goal scorer?

Wow, well done. I didn't think it would be answered so quickly :)

I just thought being this time of the year we could talk about some of the older players, have quiz questions, etc. Too good Moginie :)

Sorry, just passing the time before I had to get dinner ready. :)

Will you be going to see the cups tomorrow?

I've got one...

What do these have in common?

Cyril Rioli
Luke Breust
Paul Puopolo
Jack Gunston
Goal
Ahhh. That great goal combo in the grand final. A great bit of team play.

I have a question for you that I don't know the answer to, but as you are a Peter Hudson admirer you might know this.

Peter Hudson famously returned to Hawthorn in 1973, but in 1974 he came back and played a few games. Why did he return for such a short period?

2015 v West Coast (2nd v 3rd)
Ridiculous read of the oppo hands intercept Rioli, ridiculous reading of the intercept Bruest, great 'draw' the defender Bruest, hands to Puopolo, fains a kick, then measures, Gunston runs on (1on 2) & full stretch chest marks..play on goal? No! Set shot goal! 100% awareness of everything by every player.
In common? Linked?
Very well coached!

My understanding was he was playing some footy in Tasmania, and as the Hawks were a chance of playing finals, the flew him to Melbourne to see what he could do. For example, in 1973, he flew in, kicked 8 goals out of 13, but we lost and couldn't make the finals, so he went home. I'm not sure about 1974, but I think he pulled up sore in the knee so it was decided not to risk him any further.

More puzzling is why did he retire in 1977 after bagging a ton?? For some reason it's a weird thought him playing in the 1978 grand final - though that's prob because I've only seen him in black and white..

I'd like to talk about a former great named Ted Pool who played 200 games, kicked 230 goals from 1926-1938. Historians still regard him as one of the greatest rovers of all time, and when you consider the Hawks have had the likes of Crimmins, Matthews and Platten, that's saying something. Described as strong and determined, he also played 7 state matches for Victoria.

The story has it he came from Kalgoorlie to play with Carlton but there was nobody from Carlton to meet him at the train station, so he headed off with some Hawthorn players he met on the train :)

Ted was the first player to notch 100 games for Hawthorn, and also the first to reach 200, a club record which stood for 28 years until passed by John Peck in his final year, 1966.

I wonder if Ted ever envisaged the Hawks winning 13 flags? :)

I heard Parkin was worried about the one-dimensional forward line up, relying too much on Hudson along the lines of Franklin, so the Hawks decided not to invite Huddo back in 1978. I'm not sure how Hudson 110, Matthews 91, and Hendrie 52 was a one-dimensional forward line :)

My dad used to rave about Ted Pool. I can remember saying he was a better rover than Ian Law, and at that time Law was one of the best we had ever had at Hawthorn. Oh, and my dad used to say we would never be any good. He died before we won our second.

I have one. What links the following players?

Gunston
Hodge
Breust
Roughead
Schoenmakers
Mitchell
Smith
Hill

Wow I just assumed his knee was finished. How could he think we couldn't win a flag with Hudson having just won a flag with Hudson??

In 1977 we didn't win the flag, we failed in the PF, only kicking 5 goals against North Melbourne. The decision proved correct as we DID win the flag the following year. As I said though, that's what I heard, I don't know it to be 100% correct.
