From a questionable source, this one hit my desk this morning ... Even if it is totally false, it's still a fantastic rumour.

I'll simply cut and paste ... here goes

RE : Wayne Carey.

"Biggest rumour in history!!!!! I've heard it on good authority that it is gospel.

"This is real news - Peter Schwab's discussions with Wayne Carey are a smokescreen. The "family" club has expressed dismay at the highest levels about the prospect of engaging a player with such, ahem, pecadillos.

"Eddie McGuire has already been engaged in separate discussions with Ricky Nixon over Carey's future. Carey's reputed "sacking" of Nixon is again a smokescreen so that the real negotiations can continue without drawing undue attention to his future.

"What's in it for Schwab and Hawthorn? The key is that this is really a multi faceted negotiation. Carlton, who will get first draft pick are conscious about recruiting any more "Old Men" (rumour also has it McKernan will not play with Carey because of you know what). Being aware that they need more midfield grunt with Ratten and Bradley nearing the end, the Carlton hierarchy see Daniel Harford as a talent who needs fresh scenery to realise his full potential. They are hot for Harford. In order to get him they are prepared to trade first draft pick for him and at least one other (as yet unnamed Hawthorn players). To complete the circle, Collingwood want the first draft pick so they can be assured of getting Carey.

"All hope in Rocca, A. is lost. In order to get the draft pick from Hawthorn, who are prepared to let Harford go, but would be looking for another midfielder, Collingwood are prepared to trade Rocca (who may add depth to the band aid cabinet in Trent Croad's absence) and, wait for it ...

NATHAN BUCKLEY

"The rationale is that Malthouse is getting a bit cranky at how "Buckley-centred" the Magpies are (and let's face it the Buckley-centred Buckley is) and increasingly feels that little displays like last Saturday week's "blood bath" and the obvious desperation of Buckley to win a Brownlow medal are starting to be more harm to the Pies than good.

"He sees Carey, unlike Buckley a premiership player, as having greater leadership qualities and a greater desire to play in finals at the end of his career. This is all dead set cast iron FACT.

"If you don't believe, me wait for October."

So, there you have it folks. Make of it what you will. It's good for a laugh, if nothing else ...
