I have also posted this on the Port board.

For those at the game.
Watching TV all 3 games so far appeared to have had larger crowds than the official figures.
The round 1 game crowd figure was questioned on the Crows board and we have debated the round 2 game already on here, but were there 13-14,000 spare seats on Sunday?

I assume this s a bitch about the SANFL crowd gouging?

everyone know they have been doing that for 23 years. Since day one, you just added 5,000 people.

Doesn't everyone know this goes on?

My theory is that the SANFL rip off both Port and the Crows in regards to crowd numbers but they do the opposite for the SANFL games.

No way there was 7,500 for the Port V Norwood game a few weeks ago. Mates of mine also went to the Port v Glenelg game on the weekend and they dispute the 3000 crowd figure.

The problem is that Port's really embarrassing crowd numbers have been boosted up for years.

So a Sunday lunchtime Port game against the Kangaroos with tarps and empty seats everywhere has "17,000" people.

Next game there is a pretty packed Crows game or Port Showdown with what looks like quadruple the people and that clocks in at 35,000.

Wtf? we all ask.

I think it may have been that any gaps in the crowd weren't really that noticeable but I can assure you there were a fair few empty seats near where I was sitting. (Notably that I was sitting in the middle of what would have been about a 7 seat gap in the row... If watching the Crows capitulate again didn't kill me on the inside, that would have got the job done :P)

That was the type of answer I was expecting. When you are at the ground you can see spare seats, but on TV it is a lot harder to spot. :thumbsu:
According to many if not most posters on the Port board the figures for both round 2 and last Sunday were about right, although there are a few (few not many) that said they could see some people going in with tickets that weren't scanned.

EDIT: Oops, the title was meant to be crowds not crows.

in was surprised with our round 1 game with 42k, I was expecting 46k, it seemed like a huge crowd. but who knows

i went Round 1.

42k sounds like a pretty good crowd. but there is no chance in hell that there was approx 1/5 of the stadium empty. especially when you consider the couple of thousand that either stand on the concourse or just hang out at the bars.

so i've no doubt that the official crowd figures are unders for crows games. it's conceivable then that it's unders for Port games too. but i'm with Drugs Are Bad Mackay? that there's been some Power games where they seem to have bumped it (mostly the really bad turnouts you've had)

what i dont understand is what benefit there is to anyone to pretend that crowds are lower than they really are?

I don't care enough about crowd numbers to know what this is about Alex.

I think what you're saying is the SANFL are adding 5K to the actual number of people who rock up when reporting the crowd numbers?

If so, why do you think they are doing this? (or what is rumoured reason I guess)

Other way Alle.. If the reported crowd is 42K, there was actually 47K there.

If they are under reporting crowds and it means less money for clubs it is fraud and it would mean whoever did that would face legal consequences. So I highly doubt there is deliberate under reporting and its costing the clubs.

Surely match day ticket sales are recorded and the clubs get paid according to sales rather than attendances.

The AAMI crowd counting changed when it changed from Footy Park to AAMI with the new seats/Northern Stand/ticketing system.

Crows used to get consistently just under 50,000 mark (high 40,000's). 5,000 disappeared overnight with the changes.

You really notice it for big games, where there is near capacity with hardly any seating space & announced around 3 quarter time that there is low 40,000's. Where the heck would the other 10,000+ sit?

The answer is that we could not fit in 50,000+ now officially as they are not counting everyone.

Given the SANFL are selling the Crows & Port licenses to the AFL, to be under-counting crowds is pure stupidity.

Honestly I believe that if the SANFL arent under reporting the crowd numbers now then they must have been deliberately over reporting them pre-AFL because the Crows never pulled anything close to those "reported" SANFL grand final crowd figures (excluding the couple of years when the capacity was higher) which I find extremely hard to believe.

What year did they install the individual seats?
Early 2000s.
Was after the Northern Grandstand opened in 2001, but before I had my first game at AAMI (2005)

So 2002-04 - Sometime in there.

1995/96 - Robert Shaw killing off crowds.

1997/98 - Blight premiership spike.

1999? - new ticketing system, accounting for big drop-off of 7,000 (can't be all premiership hangover)

2001/2 - New granstand, increased 7,000 capacity, crowds up 5,000.

2004 - new bucket seats/lost capacity & really shit lasy year under Ayres, Lost 4,000 on average.

2005/06 - Craig spike.

2006 to 2011 trend down, combination of Crows winning % dropping 20% under Ayres (no plan B) & televised live against the gate.

2012 - Sando spike.

Reckon theres a few discrepancies in that list. 93 the biggest crowd was only 48.5k. From memory most crowds were 45-46k with only 1 above that

97 why are both showdowns included in the figure?
