robbo never, cause he neva passes the ball rarely

Maybe because he can kick goals when he doesn't pass it?

Agree with everything said on this thread, I wouldn't mind Bruce as captain as Klyntonius said he could grow into the role. Though I think if Miller can be played at CHF for the rest of the year and Chooka and Beamer keep progressing I'd be happy to have Miller as captain and Beamer and Chooka as vice.
Gary Lyon made an interesting point on Friday night where he said McLean had been very good with leadership in the huddles during the agme. I didn't see it but I take it he was very vocal with the players.

I'd go with Brock, one of the main reasons we drafted him was his leadership qualities. As for him being too young, i don't think that should matter, he will have Neitz as support as well as experienced players such as Bruce, Green, Yze and Johnstone to help. He is mature for his age, and is perfect for the job. By the end of the year, he should have established himself as a star in the AFL. Give him the job.

What about Jared Rivers?
Does anyone know if he is rated as a leader. Doesn't really come across that way but is always brave on the field

I like it that someone mentioned Jared. Not sure what sort of a leader he is though, because I'm not behind-the-scenes so to speak, but you've got a point. He'd be a fair point of inspiration for the guys. Have to admit, I love some of the guys in our backline, Riv, Fergy, Carroll, Browny, all tough as nails (looks can be deceiving) and courageous.

I'd like to see Rivers as captain but a defender could always be a risky option. What if he gets a bag kicked on him and gets dragged?

Name one player who could do a better job?(at trying to stop a opponent kicking goals) He is our best backman by a long way, very dependable, but i probably wouldn't pick him as captain. I would go for Brock. He would be one of the youngest captains in history, but all the guys that were captains at a young age have done a great job, Brock seems to be pretty active in the conversations and geeing up at the huddles, plus he leads by example with his attack on the footy, i thought Miller or Bruce at the start of this year, but Miller just needs to get back to CHF and concentrate on that, and Bruce has definitely stepped up and probably will be the next captain, but Brock would be a great choice as well

Davey in no hurry

AARON Davey would love to captain Melbourne, but has warned he's a long way off being ready for the role.

Although coach Neale Daniher has been happily talking up Davey's leadership potential, the 22-year-old isn't sure what to make of the fuss.

"I don't see any leadership in myself. It's pretty hard to think like that," Davey said.

"I used to be captain in the junior grades, but this is the highest level in Australia.

"I'd love to be captain of the Melbourne footy club, but it's still a long way off. It's something I can maybe look forward to later in my career."

Daniher last week fuelled speculation about Davey becoming the first indigenous skipper of the famous club in an interview on Fox Footy's On The Couch. "To me, he's a natural leader with all the right attributes to lead this club," Daniher said.

Asked what he thought of Daniher's view, Davey said: "It feels sort of good".

Daniher's statement created back page news in Darwin's Northern Territory News, Davey's hometown paper.

Davey has clearly been stunned by the attention.

"I've got to start to come out of my shell a bit more," Davey said. "I'm playing my 50th game in a couple of weeks so I'm slowly building up to it.

"I have a bit of a laugh around with the boys. I'm not really too worried about leadership. Hopefully what I do on the field is enough to show leadership. I want to slowly work on it year by year."

Davey is not part of the Demons' five-man leadership group, which is headed by captain David Neitz and includes Russell Robertson, Cameron Bruce, Brad Miller and Brad Green.

Daniher is convinced Davey is capable of joining the group, but the man himself is talking up Neitz's lieutenants.

With Neitz possibly handing over the captaincy at the end of the year, the race to fill the spot is very open.

"Adem Yze is still a great leader even though he's not in it any more," Davey said.

Although Davey is not talking favourites, he is sure he has competition from Travis Johnstone to break into the leadership group.

"Travis could become a great leader. I reckon he's gone well over the last year and really stepped up," Davey said. "I put my vote in for him to get into the leadership group this year. I reckon he deserved it after a great year last year."
Interesting to see his view on it.

Watching Davey on the Footy Show last night i was very impressed. He was obviously very nervous and did not have the same speaking ability of Matthew Lloyd but he has certainly come a long way since he arrived at the club. Think he would be behind Rivers and McLean in the pecking order of the youngsters but is definately going to become a leader of our club, if he is not already.

i think giving brock the captaincy so early in his career would hinder his progress. A def future captain tho. Bruce looks the goods, and getting appointed may add some toughness to his game.

I can't name a player that's better at stopping their opponent kicking goals so my point is, we should perhaps look to a midfielder or forward who isn't worried about having a bag kicked on them. There must be reasons why defenders are rarely captains.

I can't see anyone else getting the job apart from Brucey. However with the current crop of players we've got, we'll have a fine leadership group in the future, with Robbo & Yze acting as mentors a la Hird towards the end of their careers.
