The real question is, do we want him on the list next year? He's going to cost the club somewhere in the realm of $600,000 and given he might not get back at all, it might be too much of a risk when we can free up some much needed salary cap space by forcing him to retire. Don't get me wrong here, I love Aaron and what he's done for the club but the team is bigger than any one player and it may be that it is better for the team next year if he gives it away. There's lots of sentimentals who won't agree with this but I feel that it may need to be done. The fact of the matter is, he may not get back at all next year, and I feel that to justify his huge contract, he needs to play a minimum of 15 games next year.
Michael Gardiner is in the same boat but with one big difference, he is not costing us much to keep him on the list. $600,000 is too much to have a player sitting in the physio room on training days, and in the stands on game days. With an extra $600,000 in our pockets we could go after someone better than Hamill, because let's face it, he will never get back to his best. After being out for so long, he'll have to have half the season to get the feel for the game at least. With salary cap room to spare we could go after Charman, and most likely get him because Brisbane has already conceded that they don't have much money to play with. If he is willing to take a massive pay cut, probably about 50% cut, I will be satisfied. And I'm sure that if a pay cut is put to Aaron, he will take it because he is a team man in the ultimate sense of the word. He has been a magnificent servant to the club but if it is best for the team he must either be told to take a pay cut, or if worst comes to worst, be pushed into retirement.
