The real question is, do we want him on the list next year? He's going to cost the club somewhere in the realm of $600,000 and given he might not get back at all, it might be too much of a risk when we can free up some much needed salary cap space by forcing him to retire. Don't get me wrong here, I love Aaron and what he's done for the club but the team is bigger than any one player and it may be that it is better for the team next year if he gives it away. There's lots of sentimentals who won't agree with this but I feel that it may need to be done. The fact of the matter is, he may not get back at all next year, and I feel that to justify his huge contract, he needs to play a minimum of 15 games next year.

Michael Gardiner is in the same boat but with one big difference, he is not costing us much to keep him on the list. $600,000 is too much to have a player sitting in the physio room on training days, and in the stands on game days. With an extra $600,000 in our pockets we could go after someone better than Hamill, because let's face it, he will never get back to his best. After being out for so long, he'll have to have half the season to get the feel for the game at least. With salary cap room to spare we could go after Charman, and most likely get him because Brisbane has already conceded that they don't have much money to play with. If he is willing to take a massive pay cut, probably about 50% cut, I will be satisfied. And I'm sure that if a pay cut is put to Aaron, he will take it because he is a team man in the ultimate sense of the word. He has been a magnificent servant to the club but if it is best for the team he must either be told to take a pay cut, or if worst comes to worst, be pushed into retirement.

If Hamill retired today and accepted say 300K payout, he would still cost us 600K on the salary cap next year. If G Train plays on next year we have no room to move on the Salary Cap other than turn over some rookies and pick some drafts. So really it comes down to if he plays a bonus if he doesn't we are no worst off than if he retires today IMO

even if we were to go for charman we have nothing to give that wouldnt make our team weaker. we have no valueable trade bait.

picks that we should not trade. Can't afford to risk not having more young talent coming through. looking back on recent years we would have been better to take risks on kids rather than mcgough, ackland. We have traded our first round pick for watts last year in a move that hasnt showed anything yet.

Even in the unlikely case that he gets on the field again, I don't he will be anywhere near his former self. He would have lost the agility that allowed him to lunge towards opposition defenders, would probably be the slowest player on the list and when he played last year it looked like he had forgotten how to mark.

I doubt he'd be on 600k. Would probably be closer to the 250-300 mark.

I want him to retire, but if there is nothing to be gained from it (salary-cap wise) then there really isn't any point. We might as well give him one more go to get his knee right and if he fails, employ him as our tackling coach.

Well said!!!!!

I think Hammil is costing us a lot more dearer than 250-300k. I hope he retires after nov

His contract is heavily back-ended and is on around 600k. It's been confirmed.

The Age and the Herald.

They're always reliable sources aren't they?

Interesting to hear that GT is a devout Catholic and is still attending church every week...even though he said he hasn't stepped inside a church for years...

Good old (old, old) Caro and her bullshit.

More reliable than you! Everyone knows it was back-ended and if it's 250-300 as you claim, what was he on in the first year I wonder? 2 cents and a three-day-old sausage roll from the milk bar around the corner.

arron hammill is on$500k - $600k for next year. this year he got paid $500k. he has a 5 year contract on about n$500k poer year which will finish at the end of 2008 thank god. hope he retires! he should do the right thing and retire from football. Receive a good payout !

Aaron Hamill is what most call "spiritual leaders" and i have to say i absouloutly agree. word is when he is present the whole team gets a lift. he is one of those guys that brings everyone up arond him. i would be sad to see him leave at the end of '08. if does go (retire) he would definatly get my vote as and assistant coach/ player mentour. you only have to look at vision on game days and see him in the rooms and around the players. i dont think hes there for any old reason. he is an unbeliveable souce of energy for the club and in my mind a priceless asset. definatly worth the 500k even if he only plays 10 games next year.

i think that we should keep hamill, as previously stated he is a team man, and a leader of the club, even when injured, why dont we get rid of clowns such as the xavier and raphael clarke, matthew fegurson, michael rix??? that would give us 600k to get a decent full back, or even get a good pick, i no that clarke has taken a new contract but why did st.kilda offer him one??? the two of them are terrible, especially raphael, hes got no footy brain, hes a slow decision maker, the only thing going for him is his brother at the club, n he doesnt deserve to be there either!!!!
whats your view??

Both the Clarkes have been injured for the best part of their whole careers. They have the talent, just haven't been able to string any amount of games together. And we can't just get rid of 4 players for 1 because that is 3 players we have to pick up to fill the list to 44, what are we going to pay the other 3? We don't need another full back, we've just been decimated with injuries this year. Hudghton should go round again and while he's dropped off, he's still good enough to get a game each week. He could also be nominated for veteran status if we so choose as he has played with the club for over 10 years. Another point, if the players need to be motivated by Hamill revving them up then they all should be sacked. Hamill's motivational skills are great but honestly, it's not like we are going to be any worse off. That's like saying, if Tiger Woods had a different caddy he would be shit. The players are the ones doing the stuff on field and if they need to be motivated by Aaron Hamill, then they all shouldn't be playing the game. If we can't get at least 15 games from him, then he should retire. He won't get back to his best and with the salary cap room, we could go after someone who is actually able to play the game in '08.

Because Sammy is contracted for 2008 his salary is included in the cap whether he retires or not, so we may as well see if his knee can come up and he can play again. Even if he retires and is paid out his salary remains in the 2008 cap.
