Something I have been thinking about in the aftermath of saturday. ok so hawks won- imo that is the better team won ON THE DAY. the best team for the year was still Geelong. surely there should be more recognition for that? forget the minor premiership, i'm talking real recognition similar to what happens in the English Premier League (where teams play each other twice home and away, and the winner of the premiership is the team that finishes top at the end of the season). Wouldn't that be a more accurate reflection of who is the best team in the comp? Either that or play a best out of 3 in a finals series- similar to an NBA or World Series Baseball finals.

Thoughts...

afl will never have 34 home and away games, struggle to get to 22
remember 18 teams soon

No, a finals series is way more exciting than the first past the post seasons as many soccer leagues have. It's all part of being the best team, producing in September.:(

Very random kneejerk reaction.

I ****ing love finals, all of them. The complete devastion vs Syd in 05 to the crazy hyper nerves of Collingwood 07 are feelings that only exist in finals. Take the good and the bad they are here to stay.

If anything could be learned from the regular season being 5 games ahead of 2nd wasn't much different to finishing 4th so we shouldn't need to be madly reliant on having to have a near flawless regular season record.

The EPL system is undoubtedly fairer in deciding who is the best team that season. But there needs to be a climax to the season. We have no equivalent to the FA Cup.

Just making excuses now. The finals series is as exciting as it is because of the cut-throat games that are involved. With the method you mentioned also, the premier could be decided 3 weeks before the seasons ends, that wouldn't be very exciting at all.

As gut-wrenching as losing a cut-throat final is, that's what makes the season so exciting - that there is a genuine climax with so much on the line for one game.

Most championships around the world have some sort of play-off system. There's no reason to change that just because we are feeling gutted right now.

We have no equivalent to the FA Cup.

Yeah we do ... the NAB cup ... a knockout competition which isn't as important as finishing top 4 in the regular season right? (assuming the top 4 english sides make the champions league).

One idea i've explored is a playoff system where one of the bottom 8 teams can get a spot in the finals (to try to eliminate tanking) but it is not feasible.

Outside of some teams having unbalanced fixtures each year our system is great. We get to rotate supporting different sports throughout the year rather than American style 82 games of NBA or NHL or 100+ games baseball or whatever the **** they all run the same time for 9 months competing.

Hey wake up its not the end of the world, whats wrong with you people?
Abolish September, Sack the coach, Delist the whole team?

You lost big deal, you still have the best team going around, I can still see Geelong winning the next two. if I was in your shoes I would be plotting revenge on Hawthorn, and I think thats already happening ...

theres only one team other than Hawthorn & Geelong that can step up from this year (to geelongs level) and thats the bulldogs ... so I like to think of it as a good chance you will win (or we can win) in 09.

you had us on the ropes in the second but you didnt squash our spirit with goals, that was it right there, game over. couldve just as easily been a Geelong win. Looking forward to 2009, 2010, 2011 Vs Geelong ;)

Lol, so cos you lost one flag you wanna just get rid of the finals?

Personally I reckon it would be incredibly boring and be a lacklustre finish most seasons if it was simply 'whoever finishes on top wins'. Most years it will be decided before the last round, and we all love a massive game on the last day of the season. It's also good because, as shown, no matter how heavy favourites there are, anyone can win.

What happens if you guys finish 2nd next year, and then win the flag? Won't see this thread bumped too quickly will we? :p

Us people?

Once again you generalise and try and make it out as if you are a good sport.

Can we have a ban on knee jerk reaction threads? Please?

It is only fuel for the fire. Even St Kilda fans are having a go.

How stupid would it be if we had a best of three finals series? You'd just put in a team of hacks in the first final, and give them the instructions to take out every one of the opposition's stars, and then put your stars back in the following game and thrash the weakened opposition in the final two games.

Ridiculous. It would change the season completely. Hawthorn rarely had our best 22 out there in home and away season as we were getting Sewell, Crawford, Dew, Young, Ellis etc right for finals. It's about peaking at the right time and we played out best footy throughout September - you didn't.

Under your plan, Port Adelaide would be one of the all time great sides and Brisbane would be nothing. The great sides need only get to the finals (top 4 really) and then dominate once your there.

Talk about sour grapes!

If the Cats had of won then The Finals system wouldve been the best thing ever.
Finals is what everyone plays for and waits for. Its the most exciting month of the year and you want to get rid of it because your team didnt quite make it on that last day.

I would love to see a best of 3 scenario for the grand final.

  • You would get a better reflection of the best team over all rather than the best on the day. (I know, never occured to me before we lost, but, to win 23 out of 25 and not be premiers because of 1 game is crazy)
  • It would have the same excitement and reward as a single grand final
  • 3 Grand finals = 3x as many grand final tickets, tv rights etc.
  • Imagine the epic of lining up against the same side 3 weeks in a row. Will Geelong find a way to stop Hodge in week 2? Will Franklin be able to break the shackles and have a day out? I reckon it would be awesome.
I'm sure there are downsides as well though, I just can't think of them at the moment because we got done in week 1 :)

this thread is pathetic. Rediculious suggestion. We shot our selves in the foot and lost the GF end of story.
