The biggest 'freak' in the history of test cricket.

I know Hayden broke the WR today, but I just have to comment on Gilly.

He has been playing Test cricket since 1999, and has a batting average of 61!

But what makes him an incredible cricketer is his strike rate. 82! That is excellent in ODI's, but it's Test cricket we're talking about here.

Today he comes out and blasts 113* in 94 balls. But everyone is so used to this that it hardly gets talked about.

Make the most of his career, because you will never, ever see a more 'freakish' cricketer than him.

Agree wholeheartedly...never have seen a player quite like him, don't think we ever will again.
 
Bloody oath, he is an absolute champion! Not to mention a tremendous bloke too! I was p*ssing myself watching him and Haydos go nuts today, they were unbelievable.

Gilly gave me (and signed) his Super 8s hat that he said he scored 100 in, when I was about 15. That, along with a signed VB stubbie take pride of place in my room!

Can't wait to see him smash the Zimbabwe attack in the 1-Dayers at Bellerive and The 'G in January!
 
He'd probably be the first picked in the Australian team if he were just a batsman. Being the wicketkeeper is just an added bonus. I'd love to see him bat for 5 sessions like Hayden did. Stuff the 380, he'd get closer to 580.

What's great about Gilchrist is he seems to bat in a similar style to the way you read Bradman used to. Go out and make shots, score plenty of runs quickly. Not many players do this and it's brilliant to watch.

I don't think Bradman hit in the air anywhere near as much as Gilchrist does.
 
Been overlooked because of Haydos' record, but Gilly's ton was second fastest Test hundred by an Aussie, equalling his 100 off 84 balls in India a few summers back.

He did the job last year helping Tugga get his ton against the Poms and was great support for Haydos today. Absolute legend and like Sawf Dawg said, a really great bloke.

Man he was good!! Gilchrist almost makes him look like a hack.

I used to love watching Rod Marsh go for it. Wow could he hit the ball! I remember the match when he broke his bat in half. I laughed so hard because the bowler almost went to catch the half of the bat that was flying towards him. He said after the match that he thought about it but wasn't sure if Marshy would have been out or not!!
 
I have been saying elsewhere if there was an MVP award for Aussie cricket that Gilly should get it every year he has played! - a rare talent and a pity he couldnt have started International cricket earlier.
 
And there were all those people saying that we replaced Healy too early... may I be scorned for every more for being one of them :( :( :(
 
The bloke is a genius, knows when to hit it and what to hit. His ability to hit it along the carpet or through the air the way he does is awesome.

i would not have been too unhappy to let Healy play one more test. it was in brisbane and i think he was very close to 400 dismissals.

I have to agree with the sentiment. gilly is phenomenal. who's to say he won't get 20 centuries? i'm just waiting for the day that he goes absolutely psycho :)

Which is why it is very important we "rest" him as much as possible, especially for meaningless ODI matches this summer. He is our most important player, I would hate to see his value drop because of unnecessary burnout, especially with the schedule over the next 12-18 months.

Probably not, but from what I can gather, speaking to people, seeing old footage and reading, he still hit it in the air quite a bit (more than others anyway).

Only in the gaps, he was a genuine freak who could pick any gap he wanted with any ball. Imagine his scores if there was no bodyline??
