Adam Kerinaiua (born 17 June 1974) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Kerinaiua, a Tiwi Islander, was recruited from North Darwin in the NTFL. He played three of the final four rounds of the 1992 AFL season, aged just 18. In all three games he didn't find much of the ball but kicked a goal against Geelong.

He was a member of the Indigenous All-Stars team which defeated Collingwood in an exhibition match in 1994.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Kerinaiua#cite_note-2

Yet Whitey could so easily have been lost to the AFL like Adam Kerinaiua. Adam Who? He was a Northern Territory player I saw at the 1992 Teal Cup and he was unbelievable. It was a pity he only played three games with the Bears before deciding he preferred turtle-fishing on Bathurst Island.

Kerinaiua was one who got away. There have been hundreds of others and that's football's loss. I'm all for whatever the AFL and the AFL Players Association can do to encourage more Aborigines to have a real crack at our game because without them, we are worse off.

It became obvious that the backgrounds of the boys could be very different. Some grew up in the suburbs of Darwin; others - such as teenager Adam Kerinaiua, who played three games for the Bears in 1992 - came from the bush. Adam grew up as a hunter-provider on Bathurst Island. At the end the '92 season, he returned home. My only form of communication with him was via the priest who lived on the island. He would tell me when I phoned that Adam was hunting his way around the island and that it would be three or four days before he would show up.

This why roster watch is the most important part of big footy for me. I watched the Bears and like to think that I was aware of, or at least can remember, most of the players over the years. My memory is not what it was and I need nowadays to look at a pic or read something other to be reminded but I just do not have a memory of Adam:( . Adam would only 40 next year. I would love to know what he does now.

A little bit of interwebbing shows that Adam is involved with his home community and has played a role in bringing legal action in relation to their traditional rights.

I think I recall that when he came to South Freo it was with three Tiwi players, one of whom might have been a Rioli. Souths have a very strong history with NT / Tiwi footballers.

I know Adam Kerinaiua quite well as he is heavily involved with the football club I play for in Darwin. He and his wife are living in Darwin and not on the Islands anymore. I coach his son Adam Jnr in the U12s competition and he is an amazing young talent. He's one of the younger kids in the team and can still play next year but he is currently on 97 goals playing up forward and in the ruck. There's been a few articles in the Northern Territory News about him, see below.
