A lot of people are addicted to something. Be it booze drugs gambling shopping food etc. Some may even be positive like work or exercise or even sex (myth imo)
Point of the thread is what creates addiction? Is it habbit brain chemistry upbringing genetics etc?
And is it possible or even desirable to solve?
Personal opinion is it is based on reward centres of the brain environment and circumstance. Not easy to solve and only an issue when destructive. But don't know a lot about it

Sorry just to clarify are you saying positive addictions are a myth or just that sex addiction is a myth?

many people mention casinos among addictions, but I think it mostly depends on a person. If you easily get addicted, it can be anything including tv shows, drinks, games etc. I found a nice casino rating list and played it for a while and I honestly can't see what could make me addicted.

Addictive behaviours are coping mechanisms that are a fleeting attempt to transcend pain. This pain has a multitude of faces and can present as (most commonly) fear, anger, shame, jealousy, even something as innocuous as boredom. But it is stored in the body, almost always from trauma we've suffered in our lives, predominantly in childhood. People think addiction happens solely in the brain because that is how it physically manifests in a way that science is comfortable with; it's easier to find and map blocks between the nucleus accumbens and pre-frontal cortex, but much more tricky navigating the somatic nature of things that have wounded our psyche and body very deeply.

I’ve been addicted to Codeine. I’ve been addicted to Sleeping Pills.
I’ve been addicted to OxyContin. I’ve been addicted to Valium. I’ve been addicted to Alcohol.

Probably about 10-12 detoxes over the course of 10 years. One thing that ties it all together - every time I became addicted to stuff I was bored and depressed.

So it’s simple for me now, I can do most anything - and as long as I keep busy nothing becomes an addiction.

Key is to find what makes you want the certain thing that draws you to the thing your addicted to.

Right now, where I’m at mentally - I can take anything I mentioned up the top and be just fine. No relapse. No abuse.
