Hi guys

I am trying to do a little bit of research, obviously to compare a few facts between the AFL's teams upon debut.

In 1991 the Crows give the reigning premiers Hawthorn a well deserved touch up in their first game ( :) )

Can anyone remember or have the capability of finding out exactly how many debut AFL/VFL players the Crows fielded that day. And also who would you of classed as your marquee player

Thanks for your time :thumbsu:

You could do some research on it here:

It lists all the players in the match. If you click on each player, you can see their list of games. Anyone who doesn't have a game from before 1991 was a debutant.

As for our marquee player, I suppose it was probably Tony McGuinness.

I guess Collingwood would have been the reigning premiers back then, so round 1 really will be deju vu. Hawthorn went on to win the 1991 premiership.

Second from the right, all those with "1 game" would be your debutants.

Edit: Regarding marquee players, I was only young at the time, but McGuiness, McDermott and A. Jarman would have been right up there.

Interestingly enough, a couple of our dual premiership players, D. Jarman and Robran made their debuts for Hawthorn on that day too.

to coin a phrase, Freddy McGuinness was certainly the 'franchise' player to return. Mark Mickan was a close second as he was captain of Brisbane at the time.

Danny Hughes had played at Melbourne, Bruce Abernethy (NM/Coll) Grantley Fielke (Coll) Bruce Lindner (Geel) had VFL experience also.

17 made their debut I reckon, guys like Klug had been on lists but hadn't played a game.

1991 doesn't sound like that long ago but the difference between 1991 & 2011 in terms of list management and setting one up is enormous. The difference between how many AFL debutants the AFC and GC have in either their first game or their first season will be minor in contrast to how many games of footy the respected players had already played in their careers to date.

add up the games played at SANFL level between McDermott, A Jarman, Marshall, Warhurst & Fielke before 1991 and that would total up to more than what the majority of GC inaugural list would have played period. Even McGuiness played over 100 games at Glenelg before making his debut for Footscray.

Agree that McGuiness was the marquee "homecoming" signing.

As for SANFL players, i'd suggest that the marquee siging was Scott Hodges. Coming off 150+ goals the previous year, and there was a bit of will-he-won't-he sign during the summer. Very disappointing returns though from him, and he missed that landmark first game against Hawthorn.

The ones that got away - D Jarman, Wanganeen. And Scotty Morphett pulling the pin from the training squad..
