Adelaide Storms

170 km/h gusts and waves approaching 30 feet in the Bight I'm told. Imagine being at sea in those conditions!

Sounds like bullshit.

Nah, was just talking to an electrical engineer, says that traditional generation involves large turbines with considerable angular momentum that keep spinning when the power goes, so they have enough to trip the relays etc so as to fail more gracefully.

Solar if a lot more static so when it goes, it goes.

Less extraordinary when you consider it's equivalent to 22% of NSW having no electricity.

But yeah somebody's getting sacked or quietly shifted into another role.

So far it seems that everything has failed as planned, so perhaps no sackings.

It could well be a valid deliberate choice. When planning availability, as you approach 100% each extra 0.0001% costs a significant amount more than that last 0.0001%. You have to decide how rare a weather event you are prepared to cop on the chin.

I'm back! A fair few suburbs are back up now. Got to leave work early though so can't complain :p. Felt like I was driving through a creek when driving on the back streets of Glenelg on the way home... No traffic lights at all was interesting

So Adelaide... what's that like 3 traffic lights not working then- shouldn't be that much of an inconvenience.

Not exactly a little job to fix up those massive high voltage main lines too.
Ehh, just bend it the other way and its all fixed!

It's actually pretty trippy driving around out there now. All the 24 hour places like servos and maccas etc are all shutdown with lighting and everything off but the day time businesses like bank branches etc that would usually be dark are all lit up inside as people have gone home when the power went off and haven't bothered to switch off the lights so they've all come back on.
