I just spent the weekend in Adelaide for a family birthday. After my experience I think that Adelaide gets a bad wrap from other states. It is a very clean city with a large amount of parks and it seems like there is a very relaxed lifestyle. The best thing about Adelaide is that everything is so easy to get to (in terms of distance, lack of traffic etc.) The only things that I couldn't get used to in Adelaide were:
1. the lack of street signs. I missed so many turns because many major intersections have no signs. It is OK for locals who know where they are going but as a tourist navigation is difficult.
2. Supermarkets/convenience stores shutting at 5pm on Saturday and early on weeknights. Of course if you lived in Adelaide you would get used to it but it just seems strange.

I've ALWAYS loved it over there, and last month I went over just for a break and enjoyed the change of pace over there so much that I'm actually thinking of moving there.

Mustapha I agree with you about the supermarkets, it is a REAL pain in the butt especially if you're used to them being open late.

I've had a couple of very good memories over there from the last year. It's actually not too bad. There are interesting characters in the city, Rundle Mall in the middle of the night to be precise, but what city doesn't have them.

The one problem I have is that the buses stop running from Footy Park 20 minutes after the game. What about us people who want a drink or three after the game? So we walk, get lost, somehow end up in the middle of Woodville.

Anyway, very nice town, wish I could go over this weekend for the footy but I might get the chance in the finals to return.... again.....

Adelaide certianly is a very nice city. The shops shutting early is a bit of a nuisane, but then, it's like that here in Perth as well......
Can't wait to go back there for a holiday in a few months. :)

Funny you should mention the shop trading hours. Legislation is being introduced this very day to allow shops to stay open later in the Adelaide mertopolitan area.

Wooooohooooooo. Right before I move there too.

why on earth do we need later trading hours....most supermakets are open 7am to 7pm monday to friday, till 9pm on Thurs, and till 5pm on Sat.

Now tell me that there isn't enough time in anyone's week to do the shopping. I work part time in a supermarket and after 7pm on Thursdays it gets pretty quiet.

Simply no need to increase the hours. 9pm every night, what a joke.

When I'm on-call for a week I sometimes find it hard to find time to do the shopping, however we've only got our supermarkets open only from 8am to 6pm Mon-Wed & Friday. Same as in Adelaide for Thurs & the weekend.

Sensational city except for the swimming pool water being used for drinking water.

I actually don't have a problem where i live. I know some parts of the on the flat is pretty bad, but here in the foothills it's quite good.

Yeah no worries.....keep your head in the sand.

5pm close time is inconvenient, i live in a town which doesnt even have a goddam pub but our safeway can stay open til 12 at nite!

adelaide is a fairly clean city tho.

The city itself I don't mind. The people, hmmm. It's as though they rounded up the dregs of society and put them in Adelaide.
I take it thats how you ended up there.

Heh good call.

They let me go though so you're mistaken. 'Twas a close call though. Got 75 on an IQ test and the bastards said I was too smart. Quite possibly a similar story to how you ended up in Sydney.

Look, to be honest, I have been there maybe twice. It's a nice place to visit but I didn't find anything there that I couldn't get anywhere else.

Maybe its just because I don't know anyone there. The venom between Vics and South Aussies has really put me off in a lot of ways. I am too scared to drive there and I just haven't found any other good reason to go.

Anyhow, I'm sure you are not all that bad. ;)

Not quite. I went down to the corner shop to get a carton of milk and got lost.

Don't you mean the deli?
Nah the deli is a bit further. I'm scared to go there though, I could end up anywhere. And don't even think about the kiosk.

If you like Adelaide, you'd pretty much like any country town. reminds me a lot of Goulburn.

it's hicksville. yes it's fairly clean, but what country town isnt? the shop hours, the laid back atmosphere, the lack of traffic, the dregs... very much like Goulburn, or Orange (and Dubbo too)
