Interesting photo I gleaned from the AFL website of last week's game against West Coast.

Pay attention to the whiteboard and the right-side panel. The right side is the team board and there are a couple of items of note.

JAENSCH - WALKER - THOMPSON
CHEETAH - TIPPETT - ROAMER

Our forward line has the standard six positions but as you can see, the two flanks are given a description: CHEETAH and ROAMER. It seems in this case Ricky Henderson has been named as the CHEETAH and Nathan van Berlo as the ROAMER.

Is the ROAMER a player who has free reign around the ground? Can push deep in defence when under attack, can include himself in stoppages and have free reign to become an attacking option in the forward lines. The past few weeks I have noticed VB, although lined up not at a traditional flank position but more squarer on the wing.

Is the CHEETAH a player who is obviously a quicker type, who has the speed to cover ground, provide a leading target and to move the ball quickly North, either by play on or penetrating kick?

These roles are something I am particular pay attention to tonight, to see what their role is within our forward line and who will be playing them once again.

You will also notice Thomspon has a red square next to his name. The same red square seems to be designated for Dangerfield who is starting in the Centre. This is obviously the forward/midfield rotation Looking at the centre matchups you will notice Griffin starting in ruck with a blue square next to his name. His ruck rotation, Maric on the left side of the board with blue next to his name too.

On the left board there seems to be the quarter by quarter KPI's.

What can everyone else gather from this glimpse of the whiteboard? What do you think the roles of the CHEETAH and ROAMER are? Or are they just that self-explanatory? :D

GOOD pick up... i too will be watching with interest... not sure just yet, but am open to theories as to what they mean

What a find! I'll take your word for it that the roamer and cheetah words are there.

I'd think 'cheetah' would be the forward who goes on long sprints, trying to take his opponent up the ground and then back to the square.

and a roamer is? maybe a guy that coasts around looking to be used as a link player, or perhaps get free 45 out...

Not football related at all. Craigy is a fan of 70's and 80's music (as am I, given that we're of similar vintage), and the reference to Cheetah is an obvious homage to the Australian female singing duo of the mid 70's; Roamer, obviously a fan of The B52's and their fabulous 80's hit of Roam.

Maybe the roamer is the one who doesn't follow the set play book. The rest of the forwards have to structure themselves in a certain way, the 'roamer' is the one who has a licence to go where they want - wherever they feel they are the most dangerous. The type of role which prevents your forward set up from becoming predictable. The wildcard. Maybe...?

God there's a lot us plebs don't know about AFL :o

Maybe cheetah is Hendo's new nickname and roamer is van Berlo's?

Cheetah might be the short burst player, spends more time resting (bench or pocket) then goes on quick bursts through the midfield as an attacking player? Hendo seems the ideal burst player.

Roamer is the guys expected to be on the ground along throughout more the game, maintain same level of intensity and do whatever job Craigy wants of him. Hence it is VB with his tank.

Have to say the first thing that clearly sprang to mind was Hip-Cat & Tripod ;)

Hip-Cat, this is Roamer reporting for duty. Cheetah is down, I repeat.. DOWN.

I reckon Cheetah would be the small forward who is expected to provide extra defensive pressure, chasing down opposition defenders to lock the ball in.

Roamer is allowed to be more creative and find space.

Yeah that would be my interpretation as well. Roamer= lead-up forward, Cheetah = quick small forward who provides defensive pressure to make sure the ball doesn't come out of our forward line quickly .
