Advice on iPhone / email problem

The Background

I helped a mate put together a website for his business & hosted it with a company called webcity - their "support" say they don't "support iPhone problems".

Previously he had his domain hosted with a small company, his ISP, called TelAustralia, had massive problems with them delegating the DNS to webcity. Then there were additional issues where they put his domain on a blocked list, everyone but those with TelAustralia as ISP could view the website, he also couldn't receive any email until they removed it. Been some hiccups since then too.

He went out and bought an iPhone with vodafone and has not been able to get the email working. All combinations of incoming / outgoing settings have been used. Nothing works.

The Question:

So ... does anyone have any advice related to fixing the problem with the iPhone?

need more info,

does the isp offer POP/IMAP mail or only web mail?

is it a POP or IMAP mail system?

does it require SSL?

what are the TCP/IP port numbers he needs to use?

can he set it up in Outlook/Thunderbird successfully on a PC/laptop?

is the mail still on the server? ie if he has Outlook running, it may delete it from the server/ or flag it as downloaded before the iphone gets to it

Thanks very much for your response seanoff. I've answered what I can below.

The hosting company who also provsion the email, offer both POP & IMAP

is it a POP or IMAP mail system?
Both protocols are supported for incoming mail

does it require SSL?
No doesn't require it but it is supported

what are the TCP/IP port numbers he needs to use?
you're delving deeper than my knowledge on the subject but if refering to outgoing mail server ports they are: port 25 or with ssl port 465 - I might be on the wrong track here though

can he set it up in Outlook/Thunderbird successfully on a PC/laptop?
yes all working fine on pc & accessed via gmail too

is the mail still on the server? ie if he has Outlook running, it may delete it from the server/ or flag it as downloaded before the iphone gets to it
excellent & obvious point, I'll get back onto him for this
thanks again, any assistance greatly appreciated

In regards to the ports your answer was correct but it is important to keep in mind that some ISP's block port 25 and only allow their own mail server to be used. So it may cause issues sending mail out, if ssl is supported you should try using it.

Mate. You asked us to delegate the DNS servers and we did. Then you asked us to bring them back again and we did. Then you asked us to redirect them again and we did. All within the space of a week. I can tell you that if you had of asked for what was required instead of changing the order 3 times over there would not have been a problem, If you took the time to go and have a look at his handset you would have seen it was not set up properly and as soon as the iphone was set up properly it worked. There was never a problem with the Telaustralia service and we never put the domain on any blocked list. The only issue was you didn't know what you were doing. I went to the premises, found the problem with his iPhone and fixed it in 2 minutes. Im not an IT pro like you ...... but seriously a monkey could figure out that his username and set up for email was wrong. Doh! Within 30 seconds of correcting that he started to get emails. Isn't this forum supposed to be about footy?
