I have a mate who ahem...is working on the new AFL game. He asked me for suggestions as to a) where the game has gone wrong but more importantly b) how to fix the issues with the game by giving suggestions.
I have noticed a few threads here and were thinking it would be great to get all ideas and comments in the one thread. If anyone can give their two cents that would be great. Make sure you mention what version of the game you have (PC, PS2 and Xbox) as they are different.
He is really interested in getting the basics right first and then worrying about the extra frills (but he wants to know what extras you want to).
Now's your chance I guess...

i think that when you take a shot at goal, how your player kicks off the spot sucks its unrealistic. also when u take a shot ur max kick distance is about 30 metres. WTF. you should be able to kick at least 45 metres on set shot and u make a power bar for it ;) when uve aimed and set ur power bar, there should be a cutscene showing the player taking a runup for goals and kicking and if its a point they look disappointed if its goal the run around high fives

There is a power bar for shots at goal and yes, once again you'll be able to kick at least 45-50m and for some players about 60-65m. Factors such as whether it's a set shot or on the run or the wind direction will play a part but rest assured the days of 30m max kicking are over.
We haven't produced cut scenes for the actual kick but there are special cameras now for watching the ball sail through and the result from the goal umpire. Once again you'll be able to follow the trajection of the ball and not have to rely on the commentary or the goal umpire signal for the result of your kick.

nope! lolo y u assume that?

hawk, i want to dicuss a few issues

1. Difficulty.

Easy: Run up the field virtually unopposed and boot goal after goal.
Normal: EXACT SAME
Hard: Bit harder but feels like ur palying against the game, not the computer.

Most players will be forced to play on Hard just to get a decent challenge.

2. Draft picks. Doesn't matter if they're #1 or number #151, they're all the same skills-wise. Draft picks #1-#20 should staad out among draftees. Top #10 should be even more standout.

Difficulty is currently being tweaked. ATM easy is a tad too hard. We are working on what factors should be adjusted to create the difficulty levels. Any ideas are welcome. Is it a case of slower players? Less stamina? Lower skill level?

Draft pick skill levels are random and are generated from the 2006 AFL playing list. What that means is you'll have guys who turn out to be champions and guys who'll either carve out a respectable career or will turn out duds. Their stats will reflect the position they are best suited to.

IR Gurus have already tried this and failed:D

That's a fair call. I was a game buyer from Joe Public until this version so I can share those frustrations. All I can say this time is that the game is taking steps in the right direction and the first thing you'll notice is that they are listening to you guys.

I am not full of s@#t as you have so eloquently put it Maximus76. :)

I were always an employee of IR Gurus. I figured that the 'my mate works for IR Gurus' line was the best way to get the thread started as the chances of me being laughed away and abused to the shizen were very high.

Now, in hindsight this thread has proven to be very informative and useful for the development team. Like I mentioned in another reply you'll definitely notice that we have been listening to the ideas on this and other forums when we release the game.

I'm looking forward to posting details soon about the focus testing of the game. Hopefully this will end any doubt of my legitimacy on this thread.

mate, i think hawk (non ir gurus) loans his friend (from ir gurus) his account so he can post under the name of fiery hawk. they did this at xboxworld too (straypixel)

Haha yeah I consulted Straypixel about starting this thread. The poor bastard was burnt from his experience on xboxworld. I read the whole thing and knowing the truth behind it all (that we went from a multiplatform title at the start with a solid publisher to a Sony exclusive and brand new publisher with new demands by the end of the development period) I could see why he was so.
His intentions were always to find out what the gaming public wanted but his hands were constantly tied by a changing game design, exlusivity clauses and an inability to let those on the forum know what's going on behind the scenes.
This time around the design is clear, the deadlines fixed and our publisher solid. That's why your input on this site has been so valuable. We're able to gauge your feedback and ask questions about game areas we know will make it into the final product.

Re: Fixing up the AFL games

Im not doubting your involvement with IR gurus one bit, what would you gain from playing us all anyway. The big test will be when you give us a release date to see how accurate you are, anyway keep up the good work, i might even buy the game if it turns out as good as it is sounding.

Re: Fixing up the AFL games

FH- please have an option to turn off all camera angla changes, so we can just keep the basic side view camera the whole match.

sometimes it gets really annoying when the camera keeps changing!

hehehe

well i think he did say somewhere the release date was around the season launch, thats in a few days time so i cant see that happening

I'd give out the date if I could but there are a couple of factors preventing me from doing so...

1) I don't actually know myself. I'd only be guessing and I hate it as much as you guys when a game date is announced and it's constantly pushed back.

2) I think our contract prevents us from leaking a date until an official statement by our publisher is made.

Will check with management at IR to see what's the likely date and get back to y'all.

BUGGER!!! - Expect another late season release guys - not good enough. Game won't sell.

Nah not late season. If I were a betting man I'd suggest mid-season.

Don't take it as gospel however. I'd rather surprise you guys than let you down.

Re: Fixing up the AFL games

well punters, me computer broke (blown motherboard) and aint gonna be fixed anytime soon. i am posting this on a back-up hard drive (which sucks) and i cant really find anything else to do anymore. my ps2 is collecting dust and what could really pull me outta my boredom apart from me computer fixed is a decent AFL game... wink wink...
