Hansen senior coaching debut

Ash Hansen will make his AFL senior coaching debut tonight in the absence of Michael Voss due to AFL Health and Safety Protocols. Hansen spent nine years as an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs before joining the Blues ahead of the 2022 season.

Black arm bands – Phyllis Taig

Carlton players will be wearing black arms bands during tonight’s match against the Bulldogs in honour of Phyllis Taig. Taig was a life member of the Carlton Football Club and sadly passed away at the age of 106. She supported Carlton for 93 years as a member and was a regular at match-day functions. Taig received a visit from former player John Nicholls last week who was pleased to be able to have one last chat with a ‘great Carlton person’.

Looking forward to this one on the back of last week.

We generally have matched up very well vs. The Doggies over the last few years.

IIRC we were up by 28 points in the 3rd quarter last year ... only to blow it. Hopefully our new system has ironed out that issue.

Yep, not sure how much it was, but had the lead late before giving up a classic Teague 8 goal run.
Bruce kicked 5. We smashed them in the hitouts, they smashed us in the clearances. Everything else was fairly even.
Could be interesting if we've fixed the big runs of goals against.
Walsh a sneaky chance but probably not likely, so we'll be missing Walsh, they'll be missing Bruce. We didn't have Charlie last year, or TDK for this game and Cripps was well below his best.
Dogs will be up and about looking for a win. Blues will be on a high from last week.
Anything is possible in this one.

From the last side we played against them, the following will be out.
Casboult
Newnes
Fogarty
Cottrell
Gibbons
Parks
Cuningham
Betts
Jones
SPS
Stocker
Walsh (most likely)
Plowman
Ed Curnow

Replaced by:
Cerra
Hewett
Charlie Curnow
Gov
McDonald
TDK
Kennedy
Fisher
Setterfield
Durdin
Newman
O'Brien

Big difference.

One has to exercise a bit of sanity, even in norisk predictions like these, and go for the better more reliable team. That is the Dogs, clearly.

But really? The Dogs played 1 qtr last week, for the remainder they were dealt with easily, like a Mistress handling kindergarten children in a sandpit. Then one of the plumper kids spat the dummy with his short pudgy arms waving around, was sent home, tail between legs. Is this really the 2nd best team in the comp?

While Blues certainly aren't, their tails are up and that inimitable Voss optimism is a powerful thing. They may get up.

Sanity returns - Dogs by a few goals, well disciplned by the last week's events, refocused, a point to prove.

Hard to pick because w're basically the opposite of Richmond, who seem good around the ground but poor in the centre.
Our midfield is out strength but we have big question marks forward and back. I don't know how that places Carlton

Carlton match up really well against us. I'm hoping McKay and Curnow are still a little underdone as both have caused issues in the past. Big question for us is selection if Bevridge keeps going to the same well with players that aren't good enough I feel we could be in some serious trouble

The opposition second forward & second ruck are big concerns for us. Charlie is only going to improve and I really rate de Koning.

Our mid to forward connection was woeful against Melbourne so we really need to fix that to be a chance to win.

Hopefully Bailey Williams has finally worked out what colours we wear and we don't gift them 10 goals like last week

Should be a good clean game - which will be a relief after watching Richmond scraggers for 4 quarters. Even though Carlton has 14 blokes from last year not playing - the only big out is Walsh. Bulldogs are missing their second-best tall in the forward line. McDonald and McGovern seem to be doing ok covering for Jones 'retirement'.

Voss is out for the week as are a couple of other senior assistants- a real test of how well a totally new game style can stand up to the challenge.

I suspect Harry and Charlie will get better marking opportunities than offered by Richmond - which could make a difference - but Naughton can mark anything anywhere...

55/45 I reckon to Bulldog's advantage.

Disagree. Reckon Walsh, Jones and Stocker are all decent outs from last year's team. Could also include Betts given he kicked 5 and we lost by 16pts.
While the Weitering, McDonald, Gov def trio looked good last week, they're literally only one game into playing together as a unit. If Naughton gets up on Weitering early, do we think that the other two are going to be able to switch as seamlessly as Jones would've been able to?

On the flip side, at least we aren't playing Levi, Newnes, Cottrell and Parks and have Cerra, Hewett, Curnow, Kennedy, TDK, Fisher and Newman coming into the side from last year, plus the 2022 version of Cripps, not the 2021 version. And a game plan that looks more balanced, AFL quality and sustainable for the whole game.

So, despite missing four players from last year's side that pushed them, there's another four NOT playing who instantly make us better by their absence (I don't like saying that but it's true) and the 6 or so additions that weren't in last year are all decent quality.
Will make for an interesting game. I'd be surprised if it's a blowout either way. Despite tipping Blues, I think Dogs have the edge and should rightly go in as favourites.

The added unknown is how things will go in the coach's box with Voss isolating.

Really surprised that Libba only attended 1 centre bounce, can any of the Dog supporters shed some light on this?
Did he play? I'm not trying to be a smartarse, but I watched the game and didn't think he was there. I thought he was injured and was hoping he wouldn't be available.

Western Bulldogs comfortably. They’ve had a bad week, they’re a good side, the season is young, they made the GF last year.

Dogs by 40+
I am not questioning why Dogs would win, but why comfortably?

When Dogs have been at their strongest and Blues at their weakest, they did not win comfortably.

I see your reasons, however your reason only looks at Dogs situation without taking the opposition or match-up into consideration.

I agree that Dogs will bounce back and I think it will be a ripping contest, however since Dogs have not had it easy against Carlton for a long long time, I don't see a reason why suddenly this would change.

As a Dogs fan the list of Outs scares me more than the Ins. Few of those guys in the outs have completely killed us in the past. 🤣🤣🤣
