Round 17… or maybe we should call it Blowout Round. Couple of close games on Sunday, the rest had margins of 20 points or more. A lot more in most cases. Anyway, let’s wrap it up…
North v Dogs, Thursday night: There was a thought amongst some Dogs fans that this was a danger game, and when North were up and about in the first half with Larkey running amok, those fears looked well founded. It was all the Dogs after half time though, particularly in the last term. They’re really rolling now, and still have a stack more games at Marvel to come. Look out if your club is tenuously holding on to a top 4 spot; they’re coming for it.
Blues v Pies, Friday night: The rudderless Blues with no chemistry at all, versus the well drilled Pies that are trucking towards September. I’m not sure Collingwood are even out of cruise control at the moment… they might have lifted slightly for this one since it was against the old enemy, but I doubt they were pulling out all stops. Yet they still won by nearly 10 goals. Says a fair bit about both sides.
Eagles v Giants, Friday night: Another game where there was the faintest smell of an upset in the air, but in this case the result was put to bed very early. The Eagles were swept aside by the visiting Giants, who had winners all over the ground. Finn Callaghan and Tom Green
provided the midfield firepower that was far beyond anything the Eagles could match.
Bombers v Suns, Saturday arvo: Close game for three quarters as the Bombers took it right up to Gold Coast. You’d have got long odds for a 7-goal Suns win at three quarter time but they really put the foot down when it mattered. Think a lot of people are sleeping on this side sitting down in seventh spot - don’t forget they’ve got a game in hand on everyone above them which could see them sitting equal third! 5 out of 7 games at Carrara in the run home too. Under the radar.
Cats v Tigers, Saturday arvo: This went exactly as expected, in fact there might even be some Tigers fans who’d look at the 72 point margin and say they got off lightly. The worst thing to come out of it was the injury to Lalor. You’d hate to see the most promising of careers ruined by hamstring injuries.
Lions v Port, Saturday night: This was actually fairly even all night, barring a short patch that began midway through the first term when the Lions rammed on 8 unanswered goals. I’ve gone hard at Port for dropping their heads in losses and being blown away by huge margins this year, but credit where it’s due in this case. They were cruelled by injury and did well to play the game right out - they even gave themselves a chance of winning when they closed to 16 points in the last quarter. Plucky performance against a powerful home side.
Saints v Hawks, Saturday night: Sounds like those of us that didn’t watch this one didn’t miss much. The Hawks ground out an important win, and the Saints got one game closer to the end of what’s been an ugly season for them. Sack the coach already, he’s no good.
Swans v Dockers, Sunday arvo: Despite winning 6 in a row, Freo found themselves needing another one to remain in the top 8. The Swans never quite shook them but crucially the Dockers never quite hit the front. Massive home game against the Hawks next week now, with the ladder leaders at the MCG in store the week after.
Crows v Dees, Sunday arvo: Brutal early draw after the bye for the Dees with away trips against the Suns and Crows. They gave a huge yelp early when they kicked 5 unanswered goals in the second quarter, but the Crows steadied for a win that keeps them in the top 4. Izak Rankine
goes ok hey.
