Round 17… or maybe we should call it Blowout Round. Couple of close games on Sunday, the rest had margins of 20 points or more. A lot more in most cases. Anyway, let’s wrap it up…

North v Dogs, Thursday night: There was a thought amongst some Dogs fans that this was a danger game, and when North were up and about in the first half with Larkey running amok, those fears looked well founded. It was all the Dogs after half time though, particularly in the last term. They’re really rolling now, and still have a stack more games at Marvel to come. Look out if your club is tenuously holding on to a top 4 spot; they’re coming for it.

Blues v Pies, Friday night: The rudderless Blues with no chemistry at all, versus the well drilled Pies that are trucking towards September. I’m not sure Collingwood are even out of cruise control at the moment… they might have lifted slightly for this one since it was against the old enemy, but I doubt they were pulling out all stops. Yet they still won by nearly 10 goals. Says a fair bit about both sides.

Eagles v Giants, Friday night: Another game where there was the faintest smell of an upset in the air, but in this case the result was put to bed very early. The Eagles were swept aside by the visiting Giants, who had winners all over the ground. Finn Callaghan and Tom Green provided the midfield firepower that was far beyond anything the Eagles could match.

Bombers v Suns, Saturday arvo: Close game for three quarters as the Bombers took it right up to Gold Coast. You’d have got long odds for a 7-goal Suns win at three quarter time but they really put the foot down when it mattered. Think a lot of people are sleeping on this side sitting down in seventh spot - don’t forget they’ve got a game in hand on everyone above them which could see them sitting equal third! 5 out of 7 games at Carrara in the run home too. Under the radar.

Cats v Tigers, Saturday arvo: This went exactly as expected, in fact there might even be some Tigers fans who’d look at the 72 point margin and say they got off lightly. The worst thing to come out of it was the injury to Lalor. You’d hate to see the most promising of careers ruined by hamstring injuries.

Lions v Port, Saturday night: This was actually fairly even all night, barring a short patch that began midway through the first term when the Lions rammed on 8 unanswered goals. I’ve gone hard at Port for dropping their heads in losses and being blown away by huge margins this year, but credit where it’s due in this case. They were cruelled by injury and did well to play the game right out - they even gave themselves a chance of winning when they closed to 16 points in the last quarter. Plucky performance against a powerful home side.

Saints v Hawks, Saturday night: Sounds like those of us that didn’t watch this one didn’t miss much. The Hawks ground out an important win, and the Saints got one game closer to the end of what’s been an ugly season for them. Sack the coach already, he’s no good.

Swans v Dockers, Sunday arvo: Despite winning 6 in a row, Freo found themselves needing another one to remain in the top 8. The Swans never quite shook them but crucially the Dockers never quite hit the front. Massive home game against the Hawks next week now, with the ladder leaders at the MCG in store the week after.

Crows v Dees, Sunday arvo: Brutal early draw after the bye for the Dees with away trips against the Suns and Crows. They gave a huge yelp early when they kicked 5 unanswered goals in the second quarter, but the Crows steadied for a win that keeps them in the top 4. Izak Rankine goes ok hey.

Don’t forget to post your Liked, Learnt, Hated below… along with any other thoughts you had about Round 17!

Dogs maul the weak
Pies the most consistent
wce are terrible
GWS like the hawks starting to turn it up
Suns steadied
Crows getting it done
Geelong smash teams into oblivion
Fremantle are in a little trouble imo

Freo hawks huge nextbweek hawks win imo

Liked: Hawthorn the in form team heading into the late stage of the season.

Collingwood fans singing the St Kilda theme song to TDK

Carlton, Essendon losing in style

Learnt: AFLW losing money. Not surprised at all, good luck to the AFL who want it to turn a profit by 2031.

Hated: Marvel Stadium is on par with GMHBA as a soulless footy ground.

Liked: A game against Richmond devoid of their fans at the ground. Were not missed one little bit.

Learnt: Not much. There's a few good teams and then the cliff is huge to the rest.

Hated: Bad injuries. SPP out for another year. Tigers need to develop kids not have them blow a string 3 mins in like Lalor. Poor kid.

Loved - special edition: Ken Hinkley. Serving his notice period and doesn't give a **** what the Port faithful think of him. Non-port fans found it funny.

Liked : Winning again, George Stevens debut, Jack Martin.

Learnt: The competition is not as even as the AFL would like you to believe

Hated: White shorts at home again! Young Lalor injury

Liked: The Bulldogs’ powerful second-half push highlighted their rising top-four credentials, especially with their strong finish and soft run home. 🐶

Learnt: The Suns are quietly building momentum—one game in hand and a favorable draw make them a serious finals contender, even if few are talking about them. ☀️

Hated: The heartbreaking injury to Sammy Lalor. 😢

Liked:
Winning despite playing like a busted arse for much of the game.
Rankine re-capturing his best form. Keep him forward please.

Learnt:
The Swans won't make the 8, but they'll cause a lot of problems in the run home.
Melbourne really need a fresh start. Sure, we all learnt that ages ago, but it was so evident watching them live. There's still too much quality for them to be 15th.

Hated:
Injuries - Lalor, SPP and Rachele the biggest ones. Hopefully a hyperextension at worst for the knees, although it doesn't look promising for SPP.

Many of the sides that are currently having a hard time have also had a sh*t run with injuries, sure they may lack depth but it makes it hard for any side. Geelong 2023, Collingwood 2024 both had bad injury runs those years after winning flags and both missed the eight accordingly.

Didak kicks 5.
Peter Daicos takes a hanger.
Tony Francis, Mick McGuane, Nathan Buckley 30 touches each.

liked- Suns and adel continue to forge towards finals.
* blues going backwards in a hurry

learnt- Dockers still can't be trusted

hated- *Sam Lalor going down again
*SPP terrible luck with another ACL

Probably the most boring round I can remember. Well the Sunday games were quite competive. Every favourite won, many got 9/9, although a few margins were smaller than expected. There was nothing particularly memorable or surprising or noteworthy about any of it. At least next round looks like a cracker with many decisive catchups.

liked - Colby McKercher his last few weeks he's getting it done
Dogs just did enough to get it done and won easily, was good to see some spirit from North early
Sam Durham played hard at the contest, and had his best game disposals wise.
Nate Caddy and Archer May kicking 3 goals each was also a highlight.
Isaac Rankine also put on a masterclass.
got 9/9 in tipping and bonus point plus, won multi with selections.

learnt - Suns mids aren't as good without witts palming down to them. Anderson rolls royce still. Rowell struggled a little with the tag and the rule change.
Swans are still a threat, they are better than all the teams outside the 8. Good offense, defence can be susceptible though.
Crows fought hard and deserve to be talked amongst the other top 4 - Cats, Brisbane and Pies as a premiership threat.
Liked Dees losing at helps dons draft picks

hated - Carlton, just terrible to watch currently, started poorly and didn't really improve from there.
Freo are pretenders, for the second week in a row Serong has gone missing, unable to shake the tag.
