Hello. Perhaps you've been here before. Perhaps you haven't. If you haven't, here's what you need to know: these threads have a long history of being dumpster fires. For that reason, we take a much stricter approach to moderation than we otherwise do.

What is okay:
  • Heated debate / disagreement
  • Criticising the game / developers
  • Praising the game / developers
  • General shit talk

What is not okay:
  • Personal attacks / name calling / abuse / criticising the person rather than the argument / game
  • Repeating the same thing over and over and over and over (and over) to push an agenda or attempt to dominate the thread

We will not hesitate to permanently thread ban you if you are taking too much of our time.

I hope in management mode you get offers from other clubs

I guess it would kind of not work as you're not actually the 'head coach' this time round. But i did love in older games for my own imagination, doing something like a dimma and taking over somewhere else and then building up a little rivalry in my head.

AFL23's management was pretty bare bones we all know, i'm sure it won't phase the loyalists who stick to their club anyway, but i hated being locked into the one club forever. Didn't really capture the nature of the industry for me (although having an option to stay locked in would be good too, like capped or uncapped salary)

Those constant intercepted (by your own player) marks are frustrating to watch. Kick it to someone, but the guy in between marks it <10m away. Makes for some seriously disjointed gameplay.

AI is on fast forward with their kicking/hand balling even when it’s simply not on leading to obvious turnovers.

Hand balling looks like a chore. Evo 2 had brilliant handballing allowing for link up play.

Still looks very unenjoyable to play unfortunately.

Am curious, how would you expect them to play on easy? Play Fifa on easy and im sure you'll see some very dumb/incompetent AI too
On the easiest Rocket League difficulty the opposition AI actively tries to score goals for you. So damn annoying when I was trying to teach my kid how to play.

Guess we can only go off what we’ve seen, right? Relatively easy to just palm every criticism off due to difficulty.

Anyone that’s played AFL23 on the higher difficulties will know that this happens on any difficulty.

Yeah BA don't do themselves any favours, but i think by definition Easy AI has to be dumb, otherwise it would be competent and therefore not easy.

Agree though that we can't assume it's gonna be better on what we've seen. 21 hours and we can all find out for ourselves!

The amount of short kicks the AI was doing in the management footage that was being called a mark was infuriating me more and more every time. The ball was going 5 metres max and was being called a mark and you have no chance of intercepting those kicks.

The goal kicking bar is different yes but the kicking animations, celebrations are all the same. Marking players still look like it’s predetermined as there was a couple of contests where a player teleported from 5 metres away..

I really wanted to be blown away with changes to jump on the game on release tomorrow but will be holding off and checking out some streams to see how it plays on release on the full game. I was really getting my hopes up but feel kinda deflated tbh

No it didn’t

Seen a few comments about FIFA etc being incremental but you go back to the start (I was there Gandalf...) and the leap in each FIFA game was huge, from 2D sprites, to polygonal stadiums but with sprite players to full polygonal everything. And that's just graphically. Early FIFA didn't even have real player names. It was only international teams. The list is endless.

AFL 23 was early FIFA and we should have seen much more substantial improvements. The lack of pack marking or gang tackling really is inexcusable.

there just wasn’t any flow to the gameplay at all. No chipping the ball round to shift the defence or change angles, no kicking backwards to start a switch and no kicks long down the line to a tall in a pack when play slows down.

Seems like they’ve just thrown goalposts at each end, implemented the rules of the game and called it a day. Gameplay looks like it lacks nuance

What were you honest, genuine expectations for this game? Were you expecting to be blown away?

I ask because, I feel like many people who have fair skepticism and pessimism (due to AFL 23 Launch) appear also have at the same time unfair expectations of how much improvement should be in the game or what they would like to see before they are even happy. ‘I’m not going to be happy unless this and this is improved’ therefore will never be happy.

I’ve always maintained my thoughts that AFL 26 will only be an iterative update (including the much needed improvements to management and added career modes) that’s it, with some gameplay improvements here and there, nothing too spectacular.

Having said that, I’m also genuinely curious to know what other people’s genuine and honest expectations were/are for the game?

Realistic AI running patterns (from this, all else follows)

Total control of your players (cannot believe I have to write that)

Park marking that works

Gang tackling, bumping, and players that don't just stand around with their thumbs up their arses after a tackle is laid

From a gameplay perspective these are the bare minimum I would like to see.

Gang tackling and pack marks I would have thought should be the bare minimum additions to gameplay. Considering they knew everyone wanted this from the get go, surely it couldn’t have been too hard to implement in a 2 yearly cycle of releases ?

Don’t get me wrong, I still think the gameplay looks better, just doesn’t feel like they put in a huge amount of effort to improve gameplay as opposed to everything else

Mate, they can't even implement gang tackling in their Rugby games. Go and have a look it's all 1v1 stuff the same as this. Where is the new goal celebrations like the shhh in the trailer?
The goal celebrations are always such a prominent feature of their trailers. Then you play and they're nowhere to be seen.

"Oh, they pop up naturally for certain players."

Not for me they didn't. Be like NHL and let us select a pre-set goal celly. Give each player 4 celly slots mapped to the D pad and after kicking the goal we can activate one or let the game choose a default one.

I swear it's groundhog day on here!

"it's only because of the difficulty setting"
"maybe there are more modes/strategies we just haven't seen yet" and throw in youtubers granted early access defending design flaws and omissions that simply should have been fixed before its released "oh no, it's by design".

Guarantee there will be an initial spike of enthusiasm once it launches on here (especially as those burnt by 23 arent buying this day 1), but very quickly, in come the lists of things that could be "improved" or fixed.

And then the wait and games by the CEO begins..

Yep, let us run around with the player and choose a celebration..

Also, I still think the next evolution of an AFL game will be when we get full control over a player taking a set shot, walking/running in with the left stick and kicking it, using the right stick (similar like in golf). Then you can base it off momentum and timing.

It's wild they didn't even change the wind meter opacity being like 5% for the new game. Evo 2 had it very clear.

Twistie uploaded some gameplay + a full game against one of the QA testers with an interview

Much cleaner video to watch too

Still looks really dark to me.

IT looks like players are too fast running around. Everyone is sprinting non stop.

Would've preferred to see player vs AI rather PvP to see how it played (this might be in the video but only watched a brief version)

Lol he really didn't want to give it his stamp of approval, and he was quite diplomatic when he mentioned it was hard for him to play, I'm not sure if that's code for the user commands not being responsive again.
