gonna have a look at that one you mentioned above - never seen it.

Go to www.footyfanatic.net (I think that is right) and have a look at that. That is actually quite good, although it does need a few alterations here and there.

BTW, FF is free.

From the screeenies, Total Aussie Rules actually looks pretty cool.

The biggest problem with FF was the off-season business. The trading period was pretty ordinary, and too easy to trade 3 ordinary players away for one superstar, whilst the opposition never did blockbuster trades.

The draft period was allright, except it lacked abit of tension if you get what I mean......

The actual season stuff was allright, although there needed to be more injuries (in particular in reserves) and players would get tired, meaning you couldn't play with practically the same 22 each week.

Aside from that FF looks the absolute goods.

One thing I noticed from TAR, where FF already beats is the player attibures - there are about 30 in FF, whereas there is only 15 in TAR.

Also another two downpoints I noticed for TAR

The first is one that everyone would agree with - The stats are pretty limited in TAR. It shows Kicks, HP's, Pos, Marks, Hit Outs, Goals, Behinds. It needs to increase that show stuff that is shown in FF like Clearances, In50s, Rebounds, Frees For, Frees Againts, Tackles and whatever else (quarter-by-quarter kicking and handpassing stats would be nice too).

The other is a preference thing for me - The user is aware of the players ratings before they draft them. I'd rather have just a general knowledge of the player, and their reputation and whatever would be the main thing on where they are picked up. It's good that in FF you can pick a guy up at 4 because he has a good rep but find out he is actually crap, while there are some hidden gems down around number 40 and so on.

Thanks for that, I'm downloading it now to check it out!

The only thing that I hate about both of these games is the ordinary graphical interface... I'm a graphic designer so I'm probably extra sensitive to stuff like that. I'd actually love to get involved in that side of game development. There are no slick, smooth, visually pleasing AFL shareware/freeware games...

well than FF will push your limits in terms of the Graphical Design because it's not exactly it's highest priority ;)

But in terms of the actual gameplay, its about as good as you can expect from a freeware game in any form of sport really (provided you don't cheat and trade away Trent Carroll, Darren Glass and your 5th round draft pick for Nick Riewoldt and a second round pick).

If you keep the trades in FF pretty even and ignore the fact that the guy who made the game ****ed up bigtime with them, you'll find the game is quite a challenge. Otherwise you'll build up a squad which will see you go undefeated for 10 seasons and that is quite a bore.

Can't get the mongrel program to install... Keeps telling me it needs to update some crap, then restart before installing... Does the same thing after restart, though...

Back to square one...

yeah, there are also quite a few bug errors with FF.....

anyway, just played my first game of TAR and am quite impressed, although it could do with a few things:

1 - This is a must: In game commentary is needed, or at least telling the user who kicks a goal when it is kicked. Preferably full in game commentary.

2 - There needs to be quarter-by-quarter stats

3 - it seemed to me the opposition doesn't use their bench a whole lot.

4 - give each player a rating of high tight you want them to play to their man (like FF)

5 - who you want to do your kick outs

6 - captains and vice captains

7 - in the actual game when you run the mouse over a player to get stats, it would be good to get their height and preferred position too. Naturally you would have a fair idea of this for your own players (although some of them are a bit off in the game, but we can deal with that), but for some of the opposition players you really don't and you want that info as quick as possible. Especially as you play more into the game and there are no current players left on squads.

8 - Needs to be more of a distrubition of players overall talent - there were none above 90/100, and very few above 80, while I dont think there were any below 50. And a big clatter in the high mid 70's.

Overall I rated it quite good - theres more in depth strategy than there is with FF, whilst the choice of being able to play loose players is very neat.

Plus I loved the fact that I won by 85 points for West Coast in my first outing against Richmond with Troy Wilson kicking 5 goals, Ashley Sampi 3 and Adam Hunter (playing at CHF taking 7 marks) 3 goals as well.

Does anyone know of any AFL coaching simulators?

I found one at: http://www.stratagemsports.com.au/ but it's the only one, and I don't think it's quite good enough to warrant buying the full version.

Any ideas?

there is one more afl coaching simulator i know of:

Kevin Sheedy's AFL Coach 2002

it leaves a lot to the imagination, it is so buggy and i payed full retail price ($70) when it first came out!

you would be able to find it for $15 in the bargain bin at harvey norman's or something if you wanted to give it a go.

but the gameplay features are reasonable and worth a look at if you forget the bugs that fu(k up the game and also having to wait for each other match for the round to be simulated after you complete your own match which takes about 8mins to complete (no bloody skip button, how annoying!)

What I hate about footy fanatic is how you lose players for nothing. They're out of contract and before the trading starts you can pick them up for nothing. It also stuffs up the trading because the a.i spend all their spare salary cap money signing un-contracted players so they never have any room to trade.

Other then that it's a great game especially since it's free. I also had the same problem as Zeke but I managed to install the game but it doesn't work properly and crashes allot.
