Pick 38 is the tigers pick. Why 38? I’m assuming you’re sliding the pick back when there’s a bid. What’ll happen is that picks in the teens and early 20s will disappear to match bids. So we will likely see Essendon’s picks in the 20s move up initially, when Gold Coast, Carlton and Brisbane match bids.
I haven’t gone fully in depth but I think all of Essendon’s picks will be around the same spot or even higher picks, depending on where the bids come and how many points teams have to use. This is for the later picks, not 5 and 6.
Gold Coast own most of the picks in the 20’s so all the picks that are after that will slide up. Eg if Gold Coast, Brisbane and Carlton use 15 picks combined to match bids on combined four players, all the picks after that will move up 11 places in the order. It may not be that extreme on draft night I’m not sure.
Pick 38 is the tigers pick.
It makes more sense in the context of the chat I was having with casey
I guess so. But I’m not sure how that makes the strategy I outlined more or less likely to succeed. No, I think we've got our lines mixed somewhere there.
I certainly wasn't suggesting that Grlj would get through to 38.
I was saying the suggestion we should take 2 guys, trade up for Pick 9 and hope Sharp gets through to there - Richmond could theoretically do the same thing with Grlj (being that us and Melbourne don't seem to be linked to him). They could trade 3 (or 4) down to Carlton's Pick 9 (+ other stuff), and still get Grlj - using that same logic.

Watching Hayden Young come on after his injury layoff and then destroy Collingwood at the MCG with his surgically precise kicking that changed the momentum of the match (he resulted in several goals in a low scoring match pulling off kicks no one else could) I hope we put an extra weighting on these guys that can kick. One of the big changes from the Judkins to Dodoro era was the loss of silky users. What’s everyone’s thoughts on Farrow? Especially if he was the second player we go for, like it seems odd we haven’t put a whole lot of work into Taylor but for Farrow we’ve put a lot of work in. I feel like if we’re chasing Weddle, wouldn’t Taylor make sense for us.
However going back to Farrow, he’s being compared to Dawson, and I’d love a player like that, so if it’s Sharp and Farrow, would people be happy with that ? Like is he a flight risk?
Farrow played good chunks of midfield this year, as in onball.Yeah Cal mentioned Farrow as a defensive mid/ half back player in today’s episode. So I don’t know if that means he’s also considered a mid by other teams on who they think we select. I’m pretty confident they’re gonna select Sharp, the second player I feel will be Cumming but I feel like Cal hasn’t given any hints or clues about him to us, it’s very speculative.
I agree with the last sentence. I’m not really sure how he can be off it though, the draft hasn’t happened yet? He could still nail every pick in the first round of his mock draft, as he did last year.Farrow played good chunks of midfield this year, as in onball.
Cal seems very off it this year compared to last years, im surprised hes as good as he is especially last year though a d he probably gets there in the end
I personally think its Sharp and one of Cumming/Robey atm
I think he actually gets a fair bit of his info from player agents not necessarily recruiting managers tbh
Doesnt sound like it, as the Dean bid seems like it aint getting past RichmondIf we want Sharp, I would not be betting on Melbourne passing on him. Different and complimentary beast to Langford.
The floating of these names like Farrow and Schubert makes me wonder if we are going to trade back with Carlton at pick 6+ for 9 and 11. I think Farrow probably gets swept up by the Dees, but if someone like Cumming slides, he might as well.
I guess so. But I’m not sure how that makes the strategy I outlined more or less likely to succeed.
Sorry shouldve said atmI agree with the last sentence. I’m not really sure how he can be off it though, the draft hasn’t happened yet? He could still nail every pick in the first round of his mock draft, as he did last year.
We aint trading an F1 for the 13th best player in a shite draft - rest easyIt seems like Carlton will only trade Pick 9 if they get a future first. Trading late firsts and future seconds ain’t cutting it. I don’t think that’s worth it, I’d rather go for Gold Coast’s Pick 15. There will still be players that fill needs, and have good upside.
I think what Doug is saying outside of their F1 they cant get pick 9 like we can and there's just no way theyre trading an F1Because you’re saying we should trade for Carlton’s pick 9, and leave sharp until then because it sounds like no one before then wants him.
I’m saying Richmond could be in the exact same boat as us there, just swap out the name Sharp with Grlj.
Either way, not something I see likely being pursued.
Way too sensible for your first post. Have some fun.Stupid question for my first post - apologies - but would we have any interest in a key position forward? I know we've got Wright and Langford plus Caddy (although I don't consider him a 'key position' forward) and a few others who can't stay healthy but would we have any interest in someone like Aiden Schubert or Cooper Duff-Tytler (the name does makes me cringe - it's like recruiting the lead singer of an 80's New Romantics band) , if they were available when we pick? I'm struggling to understand what our rationale is for selections and where we feel our major deficits are ('all over the ground' is probably a bit too bleak).
If Schubert is gone, not the end of the world, there are heaps on key forwards on Essendon’s list. I get they Schubert may be better, but you’d don’t know what you’ll get out of May and Edwards and the like. I think Dovaston would be great. Small forward who kicks goals, which is different to what we have. Guelfi can give pressure and defensive stuff but he just doesn’t have the goalsense. It’d mean no El-Achkar but I’m not bothered about that.Yes the more I think about it, a Gold Coast trade is probably the play.
If Carlton don’t end up trading, that pick 9 likely gets swallowed, and 11 moves back enough that gold coast’s 15 basically becomes 13 anyway (I know this sort of thing has already been discussed).
But good piece of business - I just would like to look at dovaston rather than Schburt at that pick, although it’s sounding the opposite.
It's also because clubs have multiple picks in a row & its a very even draft cropt. It's easy to know when a club is in love with a particular player in a range. Its much harder to know which of 2 particular players one club prefers in a group of 6I feel as though cal is having a harder time this year due to there being so many different trade scenarios that could play out causing teams to keep the cards much closer to there chest. No one would want to be leaking information with so many teams potentially wanting to trade up in the draft.
I've been keen on getting an attacking half back nearly all season but I'm also a realist. We've just gotten rid of Hobbs, Setterfield and Shiel, and Stringer last year. I think the writing's on the wall - we need mids more than we need another defender.Taylor plays on all sizes.
We have lacked attack from half back. Taylor takes the game on as well as defending hard.
Obviously our backs have had injury issues so there are real question marks there.
Personally I think it is not smart to be ruling out a guy that competes better than nearly everyone in the draft and plays half back where we actually have had issues for a few years and plays on various size players.
We may pass if he is there but we need more of his type on the list. It does not matter if he is a backman.
Thankfully we are in a situation where we will likely get a crack at two of X Taylor,Sharp,Cumming,Robey,Farrow or even Grilj. All good competitors.
You like Oscar Taylor. He is a half back. Yes he has more speed than XT but both take the game on from half back.
So what if the back half has an extra in its numbers. We saw this year we ran out of numbers.

Hes 83kg now. Probably only going to be 88-90 in his prime. You play a bit of genetic chook lotto with these kinds of players, I’m not sure I have that appetite for risk in the top 10.
You’re counting on him being able to retain that same agility and mobility if not add to it while putting 10 or 12 kilos on his frame. Some just can’t put it on or carry it and therefore don’t turn into those massive dual threat players like your Richards or Young type players.
Can't believe how many are not only okay with, but excited by, the prospect of drafting sharp.
I hope I'm wrong and wish him nothing but the best but his athletic profile and strengths sit at the exact opposite end of the spectrum to what Essendon needs and where the game is heading. For me he profiles out to be another Hobbs/Clark type with discount Rowell upside.
While many may think Tigers taking Grlj early is a reach he is in many ways the opposite of Sharp - outside, speed, endurance, kicking, line breaker. This is the profile. Contested one pace defensive mids with okay disposal just ain't it.
With where we are at we desperately need upside on our list, elite potential. Trading to secure Robey/CDT I'm fine with otherwise I hope we end up with Taylor/Cummings if the above are gone.
He doesn't play like Hobbs. Sharp is bigger, stronger and faster than Hobbs with a higher IQ and marking ability. Can't believe how many are not only okay with, but excited by, the prospect of drafting sharp.
