AFL Live 2

I have played AFL games over the years, and they seem to "freeze" up more than any other game. I reason that it is because the amount of movement and change of players in close proximity, it messes up the graphics and "freezes" them. That's my theory anyway.

But it gave me an idea that I would like added to all future AFL video games.

Some games have a feature in them called "Autosave" , which saves the game at different points while you play, instead of just when you finish.

Why couldn't an AFL game have a feature where you set "Autosave" and it saves at the end of every quarter? This way, if the game froze up, then it would mean that you only have to replay the quarter that the game froze (since it saves automatically at the end of quarters) rather than replay the entire game again.

So, say your game freezes in the middle of the third quarter. When you go back in and load, you would be taken back to the end of the second quarter, keeping the scores and stats up to that point. Now, all you would have to do is replay the third quarter. This way the game continues from where it left off last time.

You can also use this if you are in the middle of a game, and you need to stop playing for some reason, and can't return to it immediately. You just save, and can return to it and continue without losing the scores and progress of the game.

What do you think of this idea?

Can anyone tell who that Hawthorn player is in the screenshot, can safely say I don't know.

Also lol @ the two umpires within a metre

You can have hopes, but deep down you know the truth.

My take on the pictures:

Essendon vs Hawthorn with Hurley kicking for goal:
+ The players are modelled pretty well.
+ The AFL footy looks modelled well
+ Player Guernseys look correct.

- The kicking animation looks the same for every player.
- Every player is man-on-man, i hated the aspect of AFL Live where you couldn't break away from a player and everyone was gonna tackle you 0.0005 seconds after you got the ball.
- The grass looks plain
- The stadium looks a bit jagged and blurry but i am hoping this is just the picture quality.
- There is no short socks!!! :(

Collingwood vs Adelaide with Nathan Brown (#16) kicking out.
+ Everyone seems to have the correct sponsors including umpires.
+ The shadows and lighting seem OK.

- Why are there a bunch of Adelaide players in the center of the field and nowhere else?
- Same kicking animation as before.
- Nate Brown rarely takes our kickouts.
- Goalposts look jaggy but i am hoping this is just the resolution of the picture and we get some sort of anti aliasing in the real game.
- Stadium looks weird.

NM vs Swans with L.Thomas kicking for goal:
+ Good shadows and lighting
+ Small player models look decent
+ The HUD looks better

? I hope there is an option to get rid of them tooltips

- Crowd looks pretty full, i really hope there is varying crowds (eg a GC vs GWS game would not get the same size crowd as Collingwood vs Carlton).

C.Judd player editor:
+ Seems to be a vast array of options
+ Nice face capture on Juddy.
+ Nice User interface.
+ I like that by the looks of things you can edit a current player.

- What the hell is with his head? I hope they fix that in the final version of the game.

Will Minson kicking vs Collingwood:
+ Clouds look decent
+ You can really tell that is Will Minson
+ Nice detail on the boots

- Will's face looks really blocky
- Why are they playing at ANZ stadium? They are both Victorian teams.
- Stadium looks full again(?)
- The same kicking animation
- I'm a Collingwood supporter and even i can't tell who those pies players are. It looks like we might have D.Thomas behind Will and then maybe Jamie Elliott behind him(?) No idea who the player on the left is though.

Essendon vs NM with Hurley giving off a pass
+ The crowd size looks acceptable in this one
+ Good detail to the stadium with "GO CATS"
+ Once again great detail to the footy boots

- Apparently the stadium isn't updated(?)
- Why the 2 umpires in about 5m of each other?
- Really weird handballing animation

GWS Specky vs St Kilda
+ I like the specky animation but why is the saints player facing the other way?
+ Can clearly tell that is Nick Riewoldt in the photo.
+ MCG design looks good with detail on the light towers.

Talking about freezing I'd love to be able to use my sub in AFL Live 2 haha surely WW can do better than big ant in this small area.( although if it plays better than AFL live 1 I'll happily take a game ending sub)

I was talking about the gameplay, the features within it. But I do agree, I'm ticked off Big Ant aren't making it. Imagine the big improvements they could have done with it. I mean, I wanna see what Wicked Witch can pull off, but I do think we were close to finally getting a perfect Football game.
I don't quite get what you mean by features within the gameplay.

Same premise still stands, if they're shit, who cares.

I keep seeing everyone saying the shot for goal looks crap. Are you talking about the one with Hurley for Essendon against Hawthorn? Because he isn't having a shot on goal. If you look on the radar you can see that he is in the centre square, and when you look at the ground you can clearly see the centre circle.

gotta admit one thing I loved about when bigant were making AFL Live is Ross always leaked some sort of pic or info and it always kept this thread interesting id be on a curtain page then go to work come back and it would be another 2-3 pages this one is just too quiet need something at least every week now that there is a couple pics.

The difficulty options in the last game killed it for me. With 1 jump in difficulty the game went from being way too easy to being way too hard and I couldn't adjust.

First thought seeing those screens was 'Wii AFL port'. Inspecting the images at a higher resolution however and it's not as bad as it appears. The HUD is disappointing, not sure why they ported over the Wii games HUD as it was never really a visually pleasing thing. The game itself doesn't look too bad to be honest, character models are decent and better than those in the original AFL Live game. Player likeness is pretty good on some of those shown in the few screens, others not so much but the star players appear to be pretty accurately modeled. Kicking animations shown in the screens appear to be identical for all players, hopefully that isn't true and there is some variation. I really like the second screen (Bombers/North) as the stands aren't full which means that no longer will an epic blockbuster between Melbourne and GWS draw 100k to the MCG on a Sunday twilight. Hopefully the audio is adjusted based on crowd numbers.

As for who is developing, the game has some pretty blatant WW traits, the colour pallet being the first. Whilst the game looks pretty good, the first impression you get is a more cartoony styling, especially compared to the previous Big Ant title.

Few key notes, the goal posts are clearly in front of the line and not in the centre of the line in the screen with Brown kicking in, also no goal umpire flags present on posts. The lack of player movement in some screens where there should be players presenting is concerning also, a lot of players just standing still staring at the player with the ball...

Is there a chance that TruBlu actually are developing the game themselves and are just using the engine that WW created?

I'd just rather a game that doesn't freeze tbh.

Hopefully the audio is adjusted based on crowd numbers.

I'd settle for something that sounds better than a muffled vaccuum cleaner down a drainpipe.

In 20 years of AFL games I don't think any Developer has put any time at all into crowd noise. Remember BA's masterplan to perfect one feature in each release? Was really looking forward to the one that focused on interactive crowd noise. A guy can dream.
